Synthetic Oil?
« on: August 03, 2005, 09:56:03 PM »
Well, my Tracker is due for it's first oil change since I bought it. I'm thinking of switching over to a synthetic oil though. Is there anything special invovled in changing over or can i just put it in after I drain the old oil out and change the filter? Also is there any brand that seems to work best with the Suzuki engines? I have the 1.6 in my 2000 Track.  THANKS  :)

I use Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles.  You can get the 5 quart container at Walmart for under $20.  I use different weights for my different vehicles, but use the 5W-30 in my Tracker.  I also do an extened drain interval of 7500 miles.  Since I drive 60 miles roundtrip a day, I am changing the oil about every three months.

I changed my Tracker over at about 53K.  Nothing special.  On my Lumina, I changed over around 60K.  That engine had been fed a diet of Penzoil from one of those quick change places.  The Penzoil left a nice coat of varnish looking gunk in the valve covers.  After about 3000 miles on the Mobil 1 fill I noticed the oil was very dirty.  I changed it early and noticed that it had done a great job of cleaning out the Penzoil mess.  Now my oil is still relatively clean at 7500 miles.

BTW, I don't want to start a "best oil" thread.  There are other good synthetic oils out there.

x2 on the Mobil 1. I run it in my 03 Tacoma tho. Have since 30K. I also do an extended change interval of 7K. I Just run the cheap stuff in the kick, and change it every few months. I don't drive it much.

As long as you don't have a TON of miles on your ride, I would do it. Use Mobil 1 and a good filter, like a NAPA Gold one.

I use Mobil1 in my F150... switched it at 60k. Have 66k on it now and no leaks, and it's not burning oil. :)

Mobil 1 on an 04 XL7 since new. Highway MPG is steady at 26 running stock tires around 75mph (sweet spot). After 6200 miles oil is perfectly clean. Waiting on analysis. Currently has 27k miles and climbing fast.

Run it in:
95 ES300 (Still own)
91 hardbody 2.4L (Still Own) Changed once a year
91 XJ 4.0L (Still Own) Changed once a year
91 MR2 Turbo (Twin Garrets) Wish I still owned
87 MR2 Supercharged REALLY wish I still owned
99 Tacoma 2.4L this one went 24k without an oil change and analysis came back excellent
93 Pathfinder 3.0L
96 ZJ 4.0L
88.5 Samurai 1.3L (Since it was rebuilt)
89 Samurai 1.3L (so it would stop smoking)
88 Samurai 1.3L
95 Prizm 1.8L
86 Daytona 2.2L Turbo (Garret tubo)

Never a problem, never an oil related breakdown. However the Turbo's were replaced before switch overs and were GUNKED UP! MR2 turbo actually failed from oiling problem (why it was replaced)

There's a reason Synthetic oil comes in High Performance, High heat, high friction engines... It works, doesn't sludge up and protects metal to metal surfaces from wear better. If it's the best, use it. Mobil 1 is my fav, but I have used Amsoil too and it's not bad either.

I have always used Castrol in everything I own as well, although I have switched to castrol syntec in my car and pickup (and for some reason I can't find Syntec 10-40w anymore around here....wtf?) anyway, but the suzuki I still use plain GTX 10-40, worked great for the 120k+ miles I have owned the truck.
