NEWBE HERE Looking to buy, one question.
« on: August 17, 2005, 03:51:17 PM »
I have searched and see conflicting info. What trackkick engines are interference type?
1.6 8V? 1.6 16V? 2.0 16V?

Well, From personal experience, I know that the '93 1.6 16-valve (which probably covers from the first year to '95 if not all) is NOT an interference engine.  I cannot guarantee this as I got the truck used, but from it's condition, I don't think it has any non-factory mods on it other than the AudioVox Cruise Control -- including the addition of interference pistons.  While setting the timing, I did shine a light into #1 cylinder and saw valve pockets on the piston top.

Sorry about the wishywashyness...  but DO I think you can eliminate the 1.6 16valve from the interference list.

if wildgoody or zaggy reply what they say is fact. i believe the only non interferance engins r the 1.6 8V and the 1.3 8v sammi.

why does it matter?  I never cared? just change the timing belt when youre suppopsed to and youre fine.  mine is 12 years old with 120000miles and still going...

Boy talk about pressure

I'm at home so i don't have my manuals here, but.....if memory serves unless modified the only non interferance is the 2.0L/16v and maybe the 1.8/16v, but I will check tommorow and give a definite answer.
I am positive on the 2.0 as I have one I am redoing for my wifes 92 Kick 4dr and the cause of death was a broken chain and the valves did hit the pistons.

But I'm going to support Bandit86, it doesn't matter anyway...change the belt when it's needed and service the chain on the 2.0L as needed.

By the time I machine the heads/blocks and add a high lift cam on my projects I am sure the modified engines are going to have piston/valve contact if the belt breaks...but I don't care because the only way that the belt gives a problem is if you leave it waaaay too long or install it wrong.

As i said I will check my manuals tommorow but to me it's a non issue......why the question?
It's an unusual one.

The 8V engine will not hit pistons to valves
I have a 16V engine that I rotated the piston
to TDC and turned the cam with a wrench, no
piston to valve contact, so I think the 16V engine
is also safe if you break a belt.

There have been some differing compression ratios,
one being 9.1 and the other was 8.9, I don't know if
there were 2 ratios available in different countries, or
if the California model got a lower CR or what the deal
is but if you have a 9.1 CR you could have a problem,
same with any high compression piston, there comes
a valve to piston contact problem when you start bumping
the piston into the combustion chamber.

FWIW the import specs call out 8.9 CR on an 8V
and 9.5 on a 16V both Canadian built

Mine is quoted at 8.9 and is a Spanish built 8V. I change the timing belt fairly regularly as I find that when driving in mud and stirred up water I get a lot of muck build up around the bottom pulley. The belt itself gets impregnated with thousands of tiny bits of stone, not had any failures though and I haven't heard of anyone that has.
