AUTO shift... problems
« on: August 20, 2005, 07:16:55 PM »
This is probably something simple to fix but....

Everytime I go from Park to Reverse in my auto '91 kick, the shifter is a pain to move up and down. The button is hard to press in and sometimes it's so tough my wife has to two hand the shifter to bring 'er down. I don't think this is natural... anyone know how to fix this, or what is causing it??

I'd disconnect the cable from the transmission. Then run the shifter back and forth. If it still binds, then is is either the cable seizing up, or the shifter itself. If you pull the center console out, you should be able to get in there to WD40 the whole thing and see if it loosens up.

The shifter knob button gets dry and that
makes it hard to push, I have replaced my
knob (T handle head) 3 times, and have found
this to be a problem.

My button keeps losing the retainer tab so it
falls out, I put a little thick grease in the hole
and put the button back in (tired of changing
a defective part) and this both keeps the button
from falling out when I'm wheeling and makes it
much easier to push in.

You might also want to check the adjustment,
the knob head rotates, this is the adjustment,
if you ever take the knob off, be sure to count
how many times it spins to get it off.

If it is too far up on the shaft, the pin won't clear
the rack/lock thing in the base of the shifter, spin
on farther to get more clearance.
