5 speed popping out of 5th gear
« on: August 22, 2005, 06:18:02 PM »
What would make a five speed pop out of 5th gear while driving down the road?

My factory shifter boot was making mine jumping out of gear after my body lift, if its not the shifter being held making it jump out, could be a shifter fork in the transmission? Worse case the gear is messed up probably.  Haven't been inside one of these transmissions really to know what they look like, most of my experience is with ford manuals.

Often it's a combo of the 5th gear syncro and the gear itself wearing........

I'd check out everything else that could be doing it first, shifter boot, loose mounts etc.
Generally for the price of a good used trans it's not worth fixing.

i had this happen about 18 years ago on a toyota corolla. $500 later, they said it was a $10 part but they had to tear down the tranny to get to it. ::)

After doing the 2" body lift on Silver, it would pop out of 2nd 4th and reverse by itself because the upper shift boot was bunching up on the stick against the console. I pulled the boot out and it worked fine. In the Goblin, the previous owner did a 4" body lift and it was doing the same thing. His fix was to cut the floor behind the shifter and move the whole console back a couple inches. This also worked fine...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

If you give it gas and your shifter goes towards the rear of the rig and if you let off of the gas and your shifter goes towards the front(pick a gear)the guts of your trans could be moving(gears and such)on their shafts due to wear front and back too much? shims and case's do wear out.

Sounds like good advice to me. I had to rebuild the tranny on my old MG about 10 years ago because it kept popping out of third gear. Not good on a slalom course.  ;D
