Anyone have a wheel bent inwards.
« on: August 22, 2005, 06:55:35 PM »
The tracker was hit from the side but no to hard.  The rear left wheel is bent to the rignt (wheel is okay just the whole thing is tweaked to the right).  Thus causing the car to steer right.  Looks like the control bar (thats what i call it) is bent a little (the bar coming off the chassis and linking to axle).  Are there other parts i should look at before trying to slam this thing back into shape.  Any help would be great. :-\

The upper y-link centers the axle side to side and for pinion angle. The control arms on each side will actually have an effect on the alignment of the axle. If the right control arm is bent, then it will steer the rear a bit. I'd also measure from the center of the front hubs to the center of the rear hubs. See which side is shorter. ;)

You got real good advice from the guys....

I would also take a hard look at the frame mounts, measure things up as suggested and if in doubt, get an alignment.

It is  a 91 Geo tracker.  what do you mean Y links.  All that is in rear is rear end, control arms, and springs.  I love these trucks they are so basic.  Now that I have really gotten under there and looked around it looks like the bracket that holds the rear to the control arm on the left side is all messed up.  I will try to straiten it up but will that weaken it if I beat on it.  Should there be a plate welded on to add strength after it is fixed.  I mean I am about to go to the body shop and say frickin fix it but I hate quitting and just going the easy route.  I will try to get picture of my new beast and its problem rear.  Got it cheap for $500 and it is inspected till april.  Also I will start a thread about my valve cover issue (frickin i am going to run up in something quick).

Thanks for the help,
Freak :)

Nope - you have a bracket on the top of the diff that connects to the Y link - this keeps the axle from moving side-to-side, and keeps the snout of the diff pointed towards the transfer case.

I had a pretzled left lower control arm before and it was barely noticable. Infact it was like that for quite some time and the only time it seemed to make a difference was when I put on bigger tires and the left rear rubbed the fender worse than the right rear. If the wheel is noticably turned to the right, I would start to suspect axle tube bent. Does the wheel spin straight or does it wobble? If it spins straight, I would say have the axle housing checked, make sure it's straight across. If the wheel wobbles when you spin it, then I would suspect axle shaft, but you still might also have a bent housing...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

You guys have been great, thanks.  I will check that y link also.  I was able to heat up and push over the brackets that hold the one control arm.  The wheel did straighten a little.  The drive shaft might be bent because somebody pulled up next to me and said that wheel was shaking.   :-\ Looks like more work but hey it runs good.

I also notice the right wheel is bent out a little in the same direction of the other wheel.
