1.6 16v head gasket?
« on: August 23, 2005, 01:02:15 PM »
I got a 95 kick with 1.6 16v engine. When I first start it up I get a white poof and while it idles I get a little drip of moisture out of the tailpipe I am loosing coolant but not much. In three months of daily driving I have just emptied my resovoir. I have changed the oil and it was the usual black no milkshake. I assume the headgasket is shot but before going that way is there any other posiible causes. Can the headgasket go and not put coolant into the oil?

The 16 valve head is known for cracking, I would start looking for a good used engine,I think you can put an esteem 16 v engine in yours with some parts off of yours, just don't tell the junk yard or your price and ours will go up!

Don't rip off that head gasket, just
drive it and put coolant in it, if you
really got to know, have a leak down
test done. Your minor coolant loss could
be from a weepy hose, BTW check, no
just replace the heater hose, it's on the
back of the head, and while you are at
it replace the other hoses too, then check
and replace the fan belt/s. Return and let
us know if that helps, if you still have
some coolant useage, start shopping for
an engine or a rebuild kit and a head

That little white poof of smoke could be
leaking valve guide seals, and the drip
of moisture is normal condensation, unless
it's doing this after the exhaust system is
hot to the tail pipe, don't always assume the
worst is wrong, and as long as the trucklet
runs good, take care of it and enjoy driving
it, time will tell.

One of the other things that a leaking head
gasket will do is make the radiator smell like
exhaust, and can cause over heating/hot running

Good luck
