Valve cover issue on trackkick
« on: August 25, 2005, 07:21:32 PM »
My tracker is leaking oil out of the valve cover so i go get a new gasket.  I come home do the brakes quick and then go to do the valve cover gasket.  Well everything came off easy (oil soaked engines rock, no rust and easy wrenching).  I notice the old gasket was not covering near the front so i figure the last guy must have not given much attention during installation.  For safety i used a little permatex to hold the gasket to the cover and also as a backup.  Well all leaks went away but one.  Near the rear it looks like the gasket pushed inwards and of course another oil leak.  So I am trying to do it again, this time I let the gasket adhere for a while to the permatex on the cover before installing.  Any body else have this problem.  I makes me want to cry. :'(

Install the gasket dry, permatex allows
the gasket to slip, as you noticed  ;)

I am not douting  your theory but it seemed to slip out when the previous owner did it and there was nothing on it not even that tech-red glue.  I dont know we will see in a few hours.  If it leaks again then i will try the tech-red glue to hold it in place (no goop).  Thanks for the help. ::)

You guys would not happen to know the torque measurement would you.  Normally there around 20 to 40 in./pounds right.

I don't torque mine, just tighten
by hand until it feels about right  ;)
But I've been messing with these
for a few years, I bought my Kick
in 89'  Brand new

Also, it's fairly easy to get the gasket
caught on the edge of the head and
knock the gasket out of place right as
you are putting the valve cover back
on, just pay attention and check before
you tighten the cover down

Got it to stop leaking guys.  I put permatex on the valve cover then placed the gasket inside the valve cover.  Then i put permatex on the head (after prepping both items like i was building a race engine).   Assembled them carefully then finger tightened the cover down.  Waited 2 hours then gave the 4 bolts 2 1/2 turns.  Let it cure overnight and now no leaks at all.  Still a little left over oil  burning off but its got 139,000 miles on it so it needs smell sometimes.  Now all i need to do is fix the rear end alignment.  I am thinking the body shop might be my best bet just to eliminate the headache.  Plus I am not a rock crawler like you guys.  My ride just gets me around places like snow covered roads and muddy trails.  No rocks you crazy guys.   ;D
