Suzuki launches XM radio option

American Suzuki Motor Corp. is making XM satellite radio service a dealer option on two small SUVs.

It's the first time Suzuki will offer XM service.

The move will allow dealers to install XM tuner modules on all trim levels of the 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara and XL-7 for $399 starting in September. The price also includes the first three months of service, which then will cost $12.95 per month.

Suzuki will install wiring at the factory to make the vehicles ready for XM radio installation.

"Suzuki's decision to offer XM-ready audio systems is further proof that XM is being enthusiastically embraced by consumers," says Paul Kirsch, XM Satellite Radio Inc.'s vice president for OEM business.

The dealer program is part of XM's push toward its ultimate goal of factory installation. Customers are less likely to add amenities such as entertainment systems or navigation systems if they have to wait for a dealership to install the product

Suzuki hopes offering XM will help it sell more vehicles.

"Suzuki is experiencing strong sales growth this year, and XM Satellite Radio will only boost that appeal," says Tom Carney, director of sales and marketing for Suzuki.

Suzuki sales of 49,139 are up 6.2 percent in the first seven months of this year.

XM has 4.4 million subscribers. The company's largest customer is General Motors.

Competitor Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. has about 1 million subscribers. Its largest customer is Ford Motor Co.
