Toyota axles question
« on: September 04, 2005, 06:39:55 PM »
As everyone probably knows I'm working on a 4x4 conversion for my 2wd tracker. I've been hearing a lot about people using toyota axles on their trackicks. How does the toyota axle work with the suzuki transfer case? Can I add just a toyo front axle but keep my old rear?

Since I have no front axle and I'm going to be putting one on either way, right now planning on a trackick IFS one.

If there is a guide or something out there to SAS conversions I would love to see it.

Thanks for the help.

An SAS is really quite an extensive process. Don't underestimate it, and make sure that you or a friend know what you're doing :P

As far as keeping your rear axle, gear ratios are gonna be a problem. If I remember correctly, Toyota axles have gears that go from 4.88 to 5.38 (or something around there). No 5.12's, and mismatched gears are never a good thing :)

As far as a guide, the best pictoral overview of the process is Heather and Nate's SAS project. Unfortunately I don't have the link handy (I'm sure someone will pop in and post the link).

Well if I will have to change out my rear axle too, I don't think I will mess with it. My trackick is a daily driver, and while I have someone who is going to be helping me with this project (dad is an auto mechanic), it would still be a lot of work from what I've seen.

Are the benefits really that great? It is mainly a strength issue it seems to me, but I don't really know. I'm not going to be doing any rock crawling, as there are absolutely 0 rocks in Florida, so its going to be entirely mud sand and maybe some small hills.

I'm doing an SAS for mud and sand use up here in Michigan. It's a lot about strength, reliability, and running bigger tires than 33-35's ;D

I don't plan on anything bigger than 32"s, so I think i will stick with IFS. That and if I need more strength I could get the anvil.
