Automatic locking hubs

My 91 tracker has automatic hubs and it appears that one side is sticking locked causing a bad pull to one side. This is my daily driver and because I do not plan on needing 4 wheel drive soon can I disassemble the auto lock and leave out parts so that I can make it back and forth to work? I really can’t spend the money on manual hubs right yet. Thanks

You should be able to take the sticky hub apart, clean and lube it, and it should work fine. Normally they only 'stick' when they have not been maitnanced recently.

if the inner parts are trashed can I just remove them and not have 4 wheel drive

You can just remove the hub and drive it.

Auto hubs are junk for wheeling, but
for the average onroad, need 4WD
in the snow they work OK.

I thought Autos would be cool, until
I found out they unlock at the worst
times, fail to lock and break easier.

Go to the wrecking yard and get a pair
of manual hubs, should be like $20 ea
and put them on
(check for correct opperation first)

I locked the X-90 in this weekend to back my utility trailor up a gravel driveway loaded with mowers and I got the ol- unlock as soon as you start to back up and then BANG lock back in after a bit of slippage. I rarely use my 4x4 in the X but am thinking about doing the manual switch.

I just was not aware that they would stay locked. I am pretty sure that is the case. My cv joints are not in the best shape and when I engage 4 wheel drive the cluck when I turn and cause the steering to be difficult. This morning on the way to work I noticed the clunking when I turned then it pulled very bad all the way to work. I stopped and drove in reverse to unlock the hub with no luck. About a month ago I replaced the calipers and rotors and at the time the bearings seemed fine. Any other thoughts?

I've yet to have a problem with mine ... I've even run backwards up some climbs (and they locked in).

You do need to be aware that any rollback can cause them to unlock (and then stomping on it locks them with a bang). I usually try to stay easy on the pedal till I hear em click back in if I rollback.

I also have an automatic so many times my rollbacks still have torque at the hub, so that probably helps too.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.
