YOUCH! My Sami's ran me about $36 a month through Allstate. The XL7 which is NEW compared to my wifes 10 year old lexus and the Grand Cherokee it replaced runs me about $66 a month (Lexus is $110, and the Jeep was about 90 a month). Every one allways had full coverage 300/100 liability.

The choice of vehicle shouldn't affect your premium with PLPD(basic insurance) in Canada. I hate to say it, but I think it's because of your age, and it also depends on which insurance company your dealing with. Check out the high risk market, and Royal Bank Insurance is good too.  I've been there, not that bad though, I was paying $240/mo for 10 months w/$600 down payment just last year, now that I turned 25, I now pay $114/mo for 11 months with $228 down payment with RBC Insurance. This is on my 92 tracker or my 91 civic, it's the same for each(I switch cars in the winter)
Do you have any speeding tickets or accidents? That can affect it too.
BTW - |removethispart|@$470/mo, is that without a down payment?
If worst comes to worst, I'd put the sammi in your guardians name, get them to insure it with you as an occasional driver, this will build up browney points for time insured for you, which will help you out down the road. Drivers Ed helps too.

Sounds like Uncivilized has some really good advise,  for just liablity, that's awfully high, shop out different insurance companies and such.   I pay about $300 a year for my tracker and it went up significantly when I was involved in an accident.
    Good luck.

over in the UK, My insurance depends on how much the modifications cost, I give my company all the mods with picks ,  they came back with a value of £9000 and my insureance fully comp was £278 which must be about $500 a year, if i say no value it at £4.5k then its only £178 which much be nearer $300.  maybe give you an idea.

I am 32 years old but that is not using any discount as i have to insure my main car .  just the discount they give for being older i suppose.
thats every modification declared down to the t case gears

not sure that helps ..

ins in canada is tricky thing....they make up what ever they want...

but if you do some shoppin a round you should find better....your vehicle does actually make a difference in the fact that you could hurt someone/thing worse w/ a suburban than a civic and also the look at the percentage factor.....higher % of these vehicles get in accident than those vehicles....I am 32 in 2 days and I have special ins for being a transit operator with the city and for my kick it is 138/mth all in no collision and 277 a year for my bike wich is dual use on / off road. but this is less expensive than my old 87 diesel golf and that was more than my 88 buick regal.

keep in mind these are all more expensive than my other cars when I was 20????
I pay more now than then except for one

the other thing in ont is that if you have modified you vehicle and not told the ins they will not cover you in the accident.

I found the best rates in the states with Wawanesa Insurance.  There are originally based out of Canada.  Look up their contact info on the web and give them a call and have them send you some paper work.  They saved me about $1,000 a year.

where in canada? Some provinces have options others don't! in BC we have provincial insurance and then for newer vehicles you can get the optional coverage through a private company. Being 17 and you may have a ticket or two? Try and get it put in your parents name with you as a registered driver.

I'm in Ontario, and to make a long story short, last November I was accelerating from a dead stop and my vehicle fish tailed at 40km/h on a wet road (pouring rain). Needless to say, in the event of correcting the direction of my dad's Avalanche I oversteered and went off the road and smacked a 2ft. tall cast iron post. Well 90% of the accident was COSMETIC DAMAGE, the other 10% was messed up alignment and a dented rim. Grand total came just over $8000. I was never charged and to this day the post is still not fixed.

You can call me stupid and foolish but this accident has shattered my driving career for the next 6.5 years.

So do you have your name on the title.
Down here you can't even own a vehicle until you are 18 or did they change that recently.
when I was 18 I had been in two at fault accidents dropped from my parents insurance and my premium was 280 a month for liability on a 87 mercury topaz.
it sucked.
