1.8 timing help!!
« on: September 23, 2005, 07:20:38 PM »
Ok guys i'm doing a head gasket on my friends sport and since this is so common compared to the 1.6 and 1.8 eveyone must of bought the manuels already cause there is none to be had.  ???
If some one could help me set the timing on this it would be delight. i notice some marks but something in writing would make me feel alot better about it.

Well the damn thing won't scan the diagrams (they come out black)

So I'm gonna try and describe it.

Facing the front of the engine

- Crank keyway, needs to line up with mark on front of block (appears to make the key way
  vertical) 12 'oclock' position

- Passenger side cam, index line on cam gear needs to line up with mark on cylinder
head  (this puts the mark at approx 4 'oclock' position to line up), says you can also use cam
dowel to line up, same instructions.

- Drivers side cam, index line needs to line up with mark on cylinder head
(this puts the line at approx 8 'oclock' position to line up). As above with cam dowel

- Idler sprocket, arrow on sprocket needs to be pointing straight up

- Big chain, runs idler sprocket, make sure blue plate aligns with mark on upper sprocket
(should be at 12 'oclock' on the sprocket if things are lined right, its a round mark
yellow plate aligns with mark on lower pulley, should be at 6 'oclock' its a round mark

- Upper chain, drives cams from idler, yellow plate aligns with arrow on idler sprocket
(approx 6 'oclock' position) Blue plates align with arrows on cams (Passenger cam
mark appears to be at about 10 'oclock' position, drivers side at about 2 'oclock'position)

Best I can describe it from the Haynes manual with out pictures.....sure hope it helps
