Odometer Correction after Larger Tires
« on: October 04, 2005, 01:59:20 PM »
Hey all,

For those of us who have larger than stock tires (or possibly different gear sets), does anyone know if there is a way to correct the odometer / speedometer?  The programmers don’t appear to have an application for the GVs/XL-7s, and TruSpeed units and the like only favor the domestics.

So, are any of you correcting your odometer?  And if so, how?

Thanks,
jSager

This is a very good question.  I've been told two seperate things:

A. That we have a speedo gear in the transmission that sends the signal to the computer.  So my theory is that you might be able to change this gear similar to an older Ford or GM to a different tooth count gear and accomodate gear/tire size changes.  However:
B. I've also been told that we have an electronically driven speedo and there is no gear...or there's electronics in there somewhere and the gear can't be messed with.

Suffice it to say I haven't gotten a good answer on this forum or from the Suzuki dealerships I've called.  I do have a FSM now so I might start digging through it when I get a chance.

Also, TruSpeeds could work...we'd just have to figure out how to hook it up.  The TruSpeed is a universal device invented by some guys in Iceland for their gigantic tired snow 4x4's.  Superlift just sells it here and makes (sometimes inaccurate) seperate directions for the various applications.  I had one on a 1999 Dodge Ram and discovered it was no different than one for a Ford Ranger.  The instructions were all that was different.

Another option may be the unit from Dakota Digital. It seems to adapt and correct all of the major formats for VSS.

Ordered one yesterday, but they came back with some questions:

"Before we can ship your Yellow Box we need to know what type of speed sensor your Grand Vitara uses. Does it have a 2-wire inductor type speed sensor, or a 3-wire hall-effect type sensor?

Also we need to know if the speedo system is controlled using a multiplex/bus type system from the ECU, where one wire controls several vehicle systems."

I...barely understand what they're asking and it just snowed 2 feet here so I'm not necessarily looking to climb under the GV and lay in a puddle of melting slush to look at stuff I may not understand.  Anyone know the answers to these questions of theirs?
