Couple of speedo cable questions...
« on: October 08, 2005, 08:12:18 AM »
Hello everyone, let me start off by saying im new here ;)

I searched for some of the answers I was looking for but, I still have a few questions.  My speedometer cable broke two days ago on my 93 Geo Tracker (im pretty sure its identical to a similar year Sidekick, no big differences)

-Where can I buy a new cable for a decent price?  A dealer in my area said it could run up to 150 bucks for a cable.  He also said another 1500 for a guage cluster, cause according to him the speedometer was probably routed out and non-functional.  LOL.  Trust me, the speedometer can still function, Ive tested it on another Tracker.
-How difficult is it to change?  My mecanic said it would be more difficult since apparently, the cable hooks dirrectly into the tranny.  How long do the think it would take to run the cable from the tranny through the firewall grommet?  I can tell my mecanic to do that then Ill finish it by running it the rest of the way (Save some labor charges on easy stuff)

Thats about it, thanks for any help!

Welcome to ZUKIWORLD.
I have just gone through a big headache with my speedo setup. In my area,(southern Colorado),  Advanced auto(western auto), and NAPA have cables, besides the zuki dealer.  They are cheaper than from Suzuki, but they are too long!!!!  What a PITA!  The first one I bought broke in a few miles because it kinked when I got it cluster put back in.  So I had to buy another.  Then I find out that NAPA sells one for a little cheaper(about $25, compared to $27).  Then I call the Suzuki Dealer, and theirs was about $43.  Lets see 27*2=$52, plus time spent messing with it, and now it has some wobble at lower speeds.  I think that the Genuine part would be well worth it.  The tranny to the firewall is VERY easy. The rest is the hard part.  Make sure the cable comes under the far left air vent before it hooks to the cluster.  I went over it to take up some slack, but that is where the kink came from I think.  You can go and search my speedo problems on this board to see all my troubles with the dang thing.
Glad to be fo some help
Jeff

PS, where are you located?

I put in a new one a few months ago and it was $47 from the Dealer and I live in So.Cal.  I really don't think that it would ruin your gauge cluster because it usually breaks somewhere in the tube, not at the cluster.  Also, it is very easy to change.  The biggest pain is running the cable under the dash, which isn't difficult, just a pain.  Good luck ;D  If you have any problems, I'm sure the group here can talk ya through it.

Don't forget guys that Hawk carries speedo cables.. :) I think they're OEM, and they aren't that expensive, I think mine was 20 - 25 bucks?

Depends on where you're located too, I guess, whether shipping will work for you or not.

I sent a mail to you mudfkr.  Yeah, Im heading to my local Chevy and then Suzuki dealers to try and find the cable for the cheapest.  I havent tried NAPA yet, Ill have to check there too.  Only thing Im worried about is getting the cable to the tranny.  All I have to work with is my 2 little ramps.  The place where it connects is easy to get to right?  Im not gonna have to remove the tranny or anything am I?

Alrighty, Ill let you know how my search goes.  Im gonna scan Central PA for some more dealers if I cant get it for near 50ish bucks at the two Im visiting tommorow.  A local dealer quoted me with 270 bucks for the cable installed and I thought to myself, hell no, Ill try this myself first. lol

Thanks guys!

I have a 4dr sidekick, but I dont see why a 2dr would be any different on this matter.  There is nothing in yyour way underneath the zuk.  Inside the vehicle is a diffrent story.  Routing the thing thru the center part, (under and behind the the radio), then over the steering colum then up to the cluster, thats where the fun is at baby!  It just makes it worse when the cable is too long.  Don't forget to call hawk  888 726 8724 or go to  www.hawksuzukiparts.com
they carry stock parts, but the shipping might be more than going to your local dealer.

Awesome, just put the new cable in and it works like a charm.  Speedometer is back and the grinding noise that came from the old cable is gone.

Overall, yeah, that job was much easier than I thought.  It only took about 20 minutes to put the new cable in.  Thanks for all the help guys!
