Fan hits radiator on Sami with 1.6
« on: October 09, 2005, 09:23:36 AM »
I just bought a sami with a 1.6 conversion.  The radiator is leaking because the fan massages it.  Is there a different fan or some other solution for this?  It only has the standard radiator and adding a 3 row would probably be a good idea (the car is supercharged).  Any help would be appreciated!

Just dump the clutch fan and install and electric from your local parts store. Just measure the radiator and get on that fits it.. I dont recal the part # of the one I purchaced from Advanced auto.

Before you do anything, you need to find out why the fan hits the radiator!

Even with a supercharger and a 1.6, I can't think of why there would be a change of clearance between the fan and the radiator unless the radiator has been pushed back by damage, is incorrectly mounted, is not an OEM radiator or has damaged mounting arms..

Also, I would post this question on the Tech forum at the iZook forum.  Good 'ol Larry there has a supercharged 1.6 in his Samurai and might be able to offer you some advice about this.

Oh, and pics would be GREAT both here AND there!

With this conversion if everything was done correctly, a stock Suzuki clutch fan should not hit the radiator. I would suggest checking for damage or non-standard parts by comparing to other Samurai in your neighborhood.

Good luck, -Eric

I will get pics next week when I'm back there.  It is off being spruced up at a friend's shop.  It is a camdem supercharger, a really clean installation.  The supercharger does not contribute to the clearance issue.  It is using the stock fan and clutch.  I happen to have two stock samis right next to it to compare!  It looks to me that the the bigger engine is longer from water pump back as compared to the 1.3.  Maybe and electric fan is the answer.  I'm a bit concerned since it has driving lights and a stereo with amp about electrical load.

It also came with a premier arc welder, with another alternator, battery (odyssey dry cells), etc.  However, it looks like the extra belts  (supercharger and alternator) all fit without any changes to the stock water pump spacing.

Here are some pics that don't show the interference issue, but show the blower and boost gage.

It looks like it is easily solved.  The piece that holds the hood latch had come apart at some spot welds, allowing the bolts to twist towards the radiator.  The radiator had been moved back into the fan to keep it from getting perforated, but it got perforated anyway.  A bit of welding, radiator repair and some adjustment and all should be well.

Thanks,
Alfonse
