Does anyone know an easy way to remove a rear axle bearing in a sami?

Ive done it on the trail with a hammer and a rock. WEAR SOME SAFETY GLASSES! If you bust the outer race off all the bearings will fall out and then you can hit the inner race till it busts.

Another method is to cut the inner and outer race with a side grinder. If you scuff the axle a little it wont hurt it as long as the part where the seal rides is not dammaged.

The best way is to use a press but most of the time the retainer will get dammaged.

Grind it down until it's just a thin segment left, do it to two sides then carefuly hit it off with a copper face hammer or the likes.

You may as well just do it properly (and i consider it easy), by just doing it in a press.  You've got to press one on there anyway.  Yeah, you could bash the crap out of it till it comes off, but how you gunna get it in without damaging the bearing, race, or the housing. 

Put the hammer down...  use a tool that was designed for it's purpose.

Loll, it always sounds so easy yet when I do it I have to grind it right the way down to the shaft cos it just won't break when I hit it. Do I need a bigger hammer?

I have a 20t air over hydraulic press in my garage and I still use the grinder to remove them as the FSM says. I PERSONALY find it quicker and easyer to grind them off, YOU may find the press the way to do it but I doubt ajholt7  has one and may not have access to one as easliy as you or I do so I gave him an alternative. Also there are alternative ways to get the a bearing back on - not the way the FSM states to do it but if you don't have the tools you can improvise and do it.

Like Mike said at the start it all about what you've got on hand.

I have replaced many of these (at least 10 of them).  The first few I tried to remove in a press (40T air/hydraulic).  It is darn near impossible to get them off with the press.  I never did get them off that way; ended up grinding every single one.  I just use an air cutoff tool, get a good kerf in the inner race and the bearing retainer, and then break them with a chisel.  Takes about 5 minutes per side...
Maybe somebody has been able to get them off with a press...but not me.
