Well.........

The biggest bang for the buck is going to be a full 1600 swap...but it depends on your definition of cheap.

For the 1300 cheap mods are...
- Do it yerself low restriction exhaust (at least 2" with a good quality low restriction muffler)
- Low restriction air fliter/cleaner assembly (that can be another DIY)
- 1600/8 valve cam..it's a little better than a sami cam and I recall it's a straight swap out
(compare specs I'm going by memory, but does require removing the engine or head)
- DIY carb or throttle body spacer

Anything after that is going to cost more...

I ran across this website....

http://www.gotpropane.com/p4.html

I dont know if their claims of more power are true, but this is what they said....

Suzuki Samurai Kits

Our Suzuki Kits are a dramatic improvement! This kit is the answer to Sammy carb problems. The stock carb is too small to make good power and even though the aftermarket carbs make more power, there are flat spots and poor, low-end driveability. Our kit is the best of both worlds: it has the power of an aftermarket carb and excellent low-end power. Depending on how much power you need to make, this could eliminate the need to swap the E.F.I. 16 valve, which is a major project and huge expense.

Price: $825, which includes everything you need. Comes with brackets for 1 tank. Note: tank not included.
Possible Extras: Extra tank brackets available for $85

BTW, propane is way cheaper than gasoline now, it was more than a dollar less than gasoline.  That is why I was looking into this.

i say k+n style air filter, janspeed exhaust an maybe a webber/nikki carb....

on paper that should give u around 100 hp (i think!!!)  an that would come to about £400 i reckon... if u get the carb second hand that is...

As for changing to 1.6... i say thats not the best idea... fair play if u have the engine already... but its gonna cost abit to get it fitted, an then your insurance goes up... 1.3 to 1.6 is quite a difference.

i say... if your gonna swap engines, go for the swift GTi's 1.3ltr engine it puts out about 110 hp (again, only "i think") and its still a 1.3!!! so insurance only changes a slight amount.

downside is... GTi... u just know whoever owned the engine last has ragged the t*ts off it!!!

anyways... hope that helps... not perfect info... but some good ideas i think.

Lots of good points Andy87

I think it all depends on his budget....I went with the cheapest/DIY stuff I could think of.
Your suggestions are great but somewhat more expensive.

I will differ with the 1.3 DOHC suggestion though. I've learned on theforum that for 4X4 work torque and lower rpm power is more important that ultimate power. I really like the 1300
DOHC engine, but it's a revver and weak on torque down low.
