Something to chew on over breakfast
« on: October 22, 2005, 02:56:49 PM »
( if you have limited time skip to the 3RD as its the real question)

Since i did my upgrade to a live axle.
I knew i would have to uprate my rear springs as my rough calculations meant even using stock lwb front springs i would gain on the suspenion lift.

My front end on my kick/uk vit is sitting up compared to the rear,
currently I have installed two sets of spacers on top of 3 inch lifted springs so my calculation was some what out by 3 inches lol. this mainly due to having to change the location of my radius arms because of the chassis and putting the coils under the chassis as the stock upper mounts are off set .

Options i have.

1st.  Have a set of custom springs made in US its going to be $150 .
bad points,  cost,  If i break one its 2 weeks at least to have another made and i would need to order 2.

2nd.   I need to find another make or model that will fit my needs.

3rd.  take two stock springs, cut the one down and clamp to the top of the other to give me the required lift ?
Your views on option 3 please ?

Option 4 - Weld a 3" spacer to the top or bottom rear spring mount or maybe cut the rear mount off the axle and weld a 3" spacer on then reattach it. Cost = peanuts.

Didn't Wild weld two springs together?

Do not try to clamp 2 springs together...

That has disaster written all over it. Spring companies have catolouges with the dimensions
and specifications in them...drop by and have a look there may be something already availible.
The other option is just have them made locally,,,,I don't see why you would need to go to the US, even moderately sized cities have spring manufacturers.

If all else fails...get 2 sets made in the States, that way you have spares.

I did weld 2 springs together, but the weld
does not flex, it just holds the 2 parts together

Cut the pockets off the frame and reweld them back on 3 inches lower.. That what I did to my rig.

Mark i moved the rear spring platforms down on the rear of my vit, the other problem you might encounter then is the rear a-frame is at the wrong angle to work correctly (it will allow the axle to tramp) i sloved this by extending it and fitting it on top of the axle case see, i'd post a pic but i can't work out how to do it on here now.

Have you looked into coilover springs?

I plan on using a 14" long spring in the rear, which will give about 2-3" of lift in the rear. You'd have to guesstimate what you would need on the front, since you have a solid axle, but I would guess somewhere from 10-12" long.

Cheers guys , i think the only way to go is a custom spring .

The front eneds another few trips out to settle in right in.

I will run it the same until after xmas and get some springs made .

Last question is .  does anyone know what the spring rate for a calmini 3 inch rear spring is?

I think the stock spring was around 160 PSI
and a 170-175 should be good for heavy use
