hey guys.... i tried searchin the old threads.... couldn't find what i needed on this topic.... so i thought i would just ask u....

A friend of mine owns a 1994 sami hard top... the garage has said the wheel bearing in the rear drivers side wheel has gone... i have another sami... same year... just a soft top... for spares... firstly, would the bearings be the same between these to samis??

and secondly.. is this an easy job?? just a case of a few bolts to undo... or does it require a bit of knowledge??

Any info is good info!!! please help!!!

If you wanted to put a new rear wheel bearing on the sammy. they  have to be pressed on , as well as the retaining ring.

If you are just going to swap the axles from one to the other this is a quick version of uninstall.
you just have to remove the tire then unbolt the 4 bolts on the axle flange and then slide hammer the axle out.

the bearings / axles should be the same.

Point #1:
Get new wheel bearings.  They are cheap ($11.00-$20.00 US for one) and they are NEW!  Both vehicles should use the same bearings.  (the '89 year is the 'weird" year, but I bet those bearings match too)

Point#2:
go to http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,9054.0.html. A link to that site also exists at Ack's FAQ.  It is an article on modifying a differential that shows you exactly how to remove the axles so you can get to the bearings.  You will need a way to push the new bearing onto the axle and this may require a trip to a machine shop or garage if you don't have a suitable press laying about...

don't spend that much money.............
remove the axles your self take them to a shop to have the bearings pressed on and then put them back in.

it's about a 5 hour job on a saturday.
and if you let the shop do it unless you are in like flynn with the shop owner they are going to charge at least 350 in labor plus parts for a  130 dollar parts job and little bit of your time.

Sorry but I like to keep shops in business but not on something as easy as this.
learn about your rig and fix it.
it's an eight bolt removal job. 4 on each side

it is a real easy job even if you dont have a press all you need is a nice jack a 6x6 post(about a foot long) and a full size truck with a reciver hitch witch has the big shank hole in it and whala you have a press to get the new one on to get the old one off alot of pb blaster and some good ole hammer and punch set.... dont mar the shaft though......

   Do it yourself and save some money. I reccomend the purchase of a drum/axle puller to do this job. If you plan to wheel it , do preventative maintence and do the other side.  To make this job easier the next time, upgrade to sj410 backing plates and modify your existing backing plates. The retaining rings must be cut off and replaced so have a competent shop do them with out nicking your axles.

Replace your seals and retainers if you have had any leakage...oil on drums wheels or brakes. Create a good grease dam behind the seals. You can rent a slide hammer at most auto parts. If your brake drums are difficult to get off ...there are some tricks to loosen them. Dont blow dust off the drums and shoes. Use brake cleaner spray   If you dont have a manual get one at the auto parts. All this is easy stuff with a Chilton or Haynes Manual.
