Diesel Question
« on: October 24, 2005, 04:24:43 PM »
Not sure this is in the right spot..... let me know if its not.

I'm going to do the diesel swap. I have a diesel lined up but I don't know what to look for to tell if its in good condition or not. Any help would be appreciated.

I know you want to check the compression of the motor....and on theat note I cant tell you off the top of my head exactlly what numbers to look for. I want to to say in the upper 400's but i am not positive. Have you checked out Acme Adapters? In not they have alot of info on thier site about doing the diesel swap. If you have any questions that aren't covered on the site, don't hesitate to call them. We picked their brain for over a year before we actually did theswap. Here is a link to thier FAQ page:

Also if the motor has over 100 thousand miles find out if they have redone the head. I know with the VW diesel you should redo the head every 100,000 or so.

Hope this helps

I'm no diesel tech...but I just did the swap into my sami so I might be able to help a little.

Here's my first advice:  Call the guy who owns the VW diesel shop at www.vwdieselparts.com
He helped me out with some questions.

Second:  Call or email Jeff at acme adapters  www.acmeadapters.com
He gives out advice and answers questions right away and he knows what he's doing...

I had to replace the head on my engine before I could use it...so I'm familiar with fuel pump timing, cam timing, special tools, etc.  Let me know if you have any questions about the swap!

Thanks guys. I've exchanged a bunch of emails with Jeff at Acme. I definitely going with their kit. Everyone says greats things about them and Jeff usually responds to my emails within a few hours. Which is great considering I haven't bought anything from them.

How do I check the compression?
Its a 1.6L VW NA from a 81 Rabbit pu with about 100k miles. I'll ask about the head.

Love these forums, hopefully I'll actually be able to contribute one day instead of asking the dumb questions.

you need a diesel compression gauge as they need to go alot higher than a gasser one. you will also need the right metric adapter. there is usually one on e-bay. Also after you pull the injectors to check the compression and it turns out good take your injectors and have them cleaned and checked can make a big difference. Also put new heat shield under the injectors when you put them back in or they will leak (they are cheap)
