Battery post too small for clamp.
« on: November 08, 2005, 07:19:09 PM »
The battery that I have had in my Tracker for the last year and a half has a positive post that is sized such that the clamp on the cable doesn't tighten really tight.  I can rotate the connection when it is tightened.  This hasn't presented a problem until today.  I stopped for lunch and when I went back to the truck it make a single click and wouldn't start.  I tried turning the key several times but no crank.  Then I popped the hood and wiggled the cable.  It started right up.  I think that the cable has oxidized enough to interupt the loose connection.  My question is how can I make better contact without replacing the battery or the cable?  It looks like the cable goes into a wire harness and would not be an easy swap.  The clamp to post connection is snug, but not tight.

Remove the old clamp, they do corrode and get loose,
and replace it with a Marine battery clamp, you can get
those loose with your fingers, they have a thumb screw
and a lever to tighten, add some battery washers to help
with the corrosion around the terminals and be a happy
Zuker again, you can also replace the Neg terminal too

So I can just cut off the current clamp and screw on the marine one?

Ya, the new one will have bolts and nuts
to clamp it onto the old cable, I've used
these for about 5 years now, AutoZone
sells them, along with other parts stores
