31x10.5 with 4.88 gears
« on: November 13, 2005, 02:03:35 PM »
Time to get new tires here, so I'm thinking of also installing my 2yr old BL from RRO to be able to clear 31s. Body lift was sitting patiently on the self for so much because everything was fine with 30s. I have to buy the new tires by Wednesday (promising trip next weekend...), so not really much time left.
Should I go for 31s wiith these gears and the 8v engine? Any bad experience?

I think he's putting it on his Vitara.

I think he'll clear them but it might be a bit pokey.

It's not a matter of clearing the body. It's fine right now with 30x9.50, so when I'll add 2'' BL I hope I won't have any problems with the 1/2 inch taller tire ! Maybe 32s could fit too, but I won't push my luck.
What I'm really worried about, is whether I'll be able to get the car moving if I park on an uphill without shifting into 4L, or if I will only use up to 3rd gear on the highway.
And yes, it's a Sidekick 8)

if you all ready have 30's it will be a bit slower but still driveable. you just wont be using 5th gear as much.

I'd go the 31's and just get some 5.12's to fix the gearing problem if need be  ;D

Well your 32's are really a 31 so you can go back to 5.12's and I'll be over to pick up the rear 5.83 that you won't be needing  ;D

Considering  I got the 5.83 for the road driving side of things and it's lucky to get used on the road at all now I've got the Sammy so yeah I don't really need them, but they may as well stay in there  ;D

Mongrels measure just over 31 new, bloody Aussie's can't even read a tape measure  ;D ;D
They are not lasting to well don't know what I'll get next ? Simex ??

Well the new tires are on, and it is bad, but not so bad as to lock it and wait for gears to arrive. Top speed is 120 km/h, either in 4th or in 5th in downhills. The real problems begin when you stop when on a steep slope, I had a situation where I had to revv it and slip the clutch way too much, even with 1st and 4L.
But it really feels nice on these tires  ;)

Yeah, that used to happen to me.

Then I put the 5.83's in, and the 4.24:1 low range gears, and now the Gnewt just GOES.  I put a heavy-duty Centerforce clutch in, and I don't think I really need it with this gearing.

I did go to a nice trip last weekend, but for some reason I was taking pictures of the landscape instead of my new tires and the lift. Really strange  8)
Maybe tomorrow I'll take a pic next to a normal one.

After 4 months and about 3.000 km on and off-road, I can safely say that I'm very happy with the 31s: all obstacles you face on the mountains seem much easier now  ;D and I have absolutely no problems in city driving (stuck in Athens traffic that is...). I actually had to trim twice the front fenders, it seems that you need a 3'' body lift even for 31s if you don't want to do cutting and banging.
Future plans include the Taiwanese diff drop brackets and lower gearing, as it really makes me suffer on long highway trips  ::) Any news on the 12-bolt 5.83s Calmini - Richmond R&P sets? Will they ever start producing them again ???
