Power Steering In a Samurai Survey
« on: March 12, 2005, 11:45:38 AM »
I was looking through all the gear guide web sites to see who sells kits for power steering for the Samurai.

Then I had a great idea!
I thought I would ask the real world their opinions, just to see what is out there and what other people have done.

I'm looking for a cost effective method for power steering.

So if you have power steering what did it come off of?
What parts did you have to buy / make for it to work?
Where did you get the parts from?
And most importantly how much did it cost?
Thank you for you time,
  Bash ;D

did kick p/s on my sammy havent had any problems but would have been cheeper to go yota p/s. yota is probably stronger. both will require mods(drilling, welding) to the frame for install dont beleave in mixing suzy and yota. I have both but I keep the yota parts on the yota and the zuk parts on the zuk, but that is just my pet peave.

i have a toyota ps box on my sas tracker but it would the same setup on a samy , i had to drill and tap some 3/4plate for the box and weld it to the outside of the frame, cut some of the inner fender out for the steering shaft and the ps lines , i used a tracker pump ,skys crossover steering , it workes great and the extra length uf the drag link helps with the angles of the link and bumpsteer. i looked at a lot of boxes and the toy ifs 4x4 box worked great.

I used a 1994 kick box and pump with the stock 1.6 bracket.   It would be cheaper for you to find a wrecked tracker for all the parts you need and could use, like the 1.6 engine, brakes, gears and housing, power steering, radiator, trans and tranfer case for a kicker three, ect. most of the steering kits go for about four hundred bucks.

Powersteering out of a Tracker.  Kit from Trail tough.  Requires some drilling, but goes together good.  I am happy with it.

BTW in a Sammy.

I ran kick/track ps for about 6 months. I got rid of it. I run 35's on beadlocks at 2psi and a locker in the front. The kick stuff couldn't handle it. I know that this setup is not your standard Sammi setup but I thought I would share in case you have aspirations to run 35's. I'm currently in the middle of a Hydro assist install. YOu can read about it here:

Id have to agree with NC. If you are gonna run big tires do something other than the kick setup. I run it on my little sami (31's)and am very happy. I wouldnt run it on anything above 33's myself.

I was looking at the Rocky Road Toyata Steering setup and was wondering how could a car power steering pump be stonger than the track/kick pump?
Any thoughts on this.

Is a Kick any bigger than a car? I mean seriously, they are about the same size and run the same size tires in the stock configuration.  :-/

I ran last year a Toy IFS setup from a 4-cylinder. Worked good but stalled a bit in big rocks.  This year I'm going to a saginaw TC pump and a Toy FJ-60 box. If that stalls, here comes hydro assist. As for the bracket on the engine, I just modified the stock toy pump mount to fit my 1.3l. The frame mount was easy, just sleeve the frame for the mount bolts and weld  a 1/4"plate to the outside.

Kit from CALMINI, stock parts from Hawk.  The whole kit installed in about an hour and a half and I wouldn't go back if you paid me.  The kit is so very simple to put together.

Land Cruiser FJ60 steering box ($80) and Saginaw TC pump from an '04 TJ($65).  Also used spidertrax pulley and mount, both very nice and mounted without issues.  The hi-pressure hose is custom made from both of the old ends at my local tubes-n-hoses (IIRC about $35) store.

The FJ60 box requires plating both sides of the frame and sleeves for the holes.  Got a short drop pitman arm from Sky and using his x-over steering for toy axles.

Did the saginaw pump mod for flow and used a tranny cooler.  Seems to work very well, but if you are working the pump hard, it will kill my stock 1.3 at idle ::)

Note to self: get more torque ;D

Ya know, I run the Sidekick set up on my ol red Samurai with the Dana 44s and the 35 TSL/SX's. It works really well. The reason I have had good luck, I believe, is there are different Sidekick pumps. Some are smaller /weaker.
