Is it the cat or tranny??

Okay here's my problem ::),   I have a 94  8v 3seed tracker,   And when im on the highway and trying to get the thing up to speed (which for some reason over the last week has been getting harder and harder to do) at bout 80km I here this "SSHHHHHHH!!!!" really loudly. And it only goes away as soon as i take my foot off the gas. And then i have to slowly and i mean slowly edge the thing to go to 100km, and when i finally get it there the RPMs start to go up and down by only 300-maybe 500rpms, but when it is doing this I can here a little bit of  "sshhhh".      Oh and it feels like i'v lost a bunch of power when im driving in the city, and the tranny shifts late too.  So what gives ???, Please Help Me :'(

I think you're right about a plugged cat. I had a very similar issue on one of my Samurai. The shhhhh I was hearing was caused by there being so much back pressure the soft piece of my EGR line would blow off and exhaust would spew forth! Crazy...

Check for plugging exhaust.

When it cools down climb under neath and hit the cat and the muffler with your hand and listen for a rattle sound  ;D

cut the cat off, dont need it anyways, mine was clogged when i cut it off the truck ran way better.

also mine was doing the same thing, turned out to be a exhaust leak it was missing a bolt from the manifold to the downpipe and that was the sound.

It could be a plugged cat, especially if the exhaust is very quiet when it looses power, like running totally silent. If you still hear the exhaust just fine and still have plenty coming out the tailpipe, I doubt if that's your problem. If it is a plugged cat, removing the cat might help short term, but will cause the truck to run rich and the exhaust to smell really strong... Not worth it unless it's bad.
