tire pressures
« on: November 18, 2005, 04:55:33 AM »
Anybody got a line on what tire pressures work for 31x9.5 superswamper tsl radials on and off road? Mounted on 95 track w/ RRo susp and body lift, some engine mods, sway bar removed, calmini bumper w/ warn m6000 winch. I'v also just finished the body lift and had to "tweak" the transfercase shift lever a bit, as well as extend it. Anyone else had to do this? Thanks much for any help.

I have no personal experience with those tires, but keep in mind that not just air pressure, but air volume determine proper inflation.  You can perform a "foot print" or contact patch test at different air pressures by taking two sheets of paper and slipping them under the tire until they stop (where the tire contacts the ground).

Do this from front to back and from side to side and that'll give you and idea how big your contact patch is.  However, if the tire is mounted on a wheel that is more narrow than what the manufacturer calls for, then contact patch side to side will be affected and even at proper inflation the sides of the tire will likely be off the ground.  With 30's and 31's I've found that 12-15 psi gives me a contact patch where the side of the tread is on the ground.  But because we drive it on the highway sometimes I'll run 20-26 psi because I don't want to take the chance that the tire may overheat.

Keep in mind what you want though.  My kid has 31 BFG MT's on his Zuk and inflates them to over 40 psi because his worry is gas mileage and being able to go down the road at a decent speed.  His young back and kidneys are not worried about ride quality and with his hard compound tires he's not worried about tire wear.

Be worried about under-inflation and the tire getting too hot.  Enough heat and the tire can start to break down meaning an impending tire failure.

the tcase lever is common. Some (like me) have to do major changes to the tranny lever as well.

As for the tire pressure it depends on the type of wheeling you are doing and how fast you are going. for general crawling I would run 12-14psi and drop from there if you need to. In snow you can go way lower (same for sand)

;) Thanks for the info on footprints and starting pressures, much appreciated. I'll do the footprint test for my on road driving first. I too would like the best ride possible, mileage being a non factor for me. I can afford gas, especially at 25 mpg.  Muchos grasias.

with interco trxus mt 31/10.5's on my gfs tracker we usually ran 10 psi, seemed to perform well.... i stole them and put em on my sami and ran em down to 7 psi... almost to low but very grippy.... definatly alot different then my bias plys... 3 psi in them feels like 8 in a radial.

Thanks to everyone for their input. The more I learn about these Zuki's, the more I realize I don't know!  :o
