Gearing
« on: November 19, 2005, 07:10:40 AM »
??? I've read all the threads on tires and gearing and still have one question. I've done the susp. and body lift ( RRO) on my 95 Tracker, Auto trans, and went from 235 to 31" swampers. I'm considering a gearing change to bring the on road performance back in line.  I've also done a complete exhaust system, header, free flow cat and muffler, larger tubing, airfilter and chip mod. It runs strong, but could use a bit more in the acceleration department now that I have the 31's. My question is this: All the threads talk about changing the pinion and ring to lower the overall gearing, but I did not see any mention if you have to change both rear AND front gear sets. I understand that driving on road in two wheel high only involves the rear diff, and thats where I would like the change. But if I lower the ratio on the rear,  wouldn't that make the front and rear different ratios? how would that effect 4wheeling off road in either high or low range? Sorry for the long winded post. Thanks for any help.

If you don't change both, you really can't use four wheel drive.  The front end and the rear end would be "fighting" each other and the stress it would put on your T-case would be tremendous.  The drive train from the T-case and after would constantly be in a bind.

With your auto and 31's the 5.12 ratio out of a manual kick would probably make a sweet set up and reasonable cheap too as you won't have to set up new gears just change the complete thirds over.

I have a spread sheet in M/Soft excel format if you want to play with the different ratios and see what you'd end up with. Let me know if you want it and I'll email it to you.

;) The swap from a manual seems like the hot setup. Now all I've got to do is find a junk yard with the parts! Anyone know where in south Jersey or eastern Pa? Thanks everyone for your input!

I was wondering if you can tell me what that chip mod of yours is?

;) It's an inline system that connects to the air intake temp sensor. I'm not excactly sure how it works, but it modifies the signal, and eventually ends up with a richer mixture. I did notice a real performance gain, especially after I did the Exhaust and airbox mods. But even without them it had more punch everywhere. I've also found with all the mods it runs much better on premium ( 93 octane.) The Company is called Northeast Performance, I found them after doing a search for Geo Tracker performance mods. If you can't find them I'll dig around in my shop for the #.

and chip mod.

???
Is this the resistor mod that costs $20 on E-bay ???
How is your fuel milage after this mod ?

:) No, but I actually contemplated one of those. This unit is housed  in a small ss box that mounts on the dash and is enabled/ disabled via a switch. Hell, for all I know it may be the same thing in a spiffy package! However it does work, and my gas milage on my last trip averaged about 26mpg. That was with 29" tires, stock gearing, auto trans. That mpg was measured over 1200 miles from NJ to MI and back, most of the time cruising at 70-75mph  and included quite a bit of mountain  driving. ( Or what they call mountains on the east coast.)

 :'(

I never got 26 MPG

Best ever about 23, bone stock
with a 3 speed auto trans

I have the 3 speed auto as well, but I'm not sure what else. What I mean is, once in third gear, if I exceed about 50mph, It seems to shift once more, not a full gear, but it drops about 3-400 rmp. My buddy and I were discussing it while we were out wheeling today and he  came to the conclusion its probably not an " overdrive"  because it's not labled as one anywhere, shifter, dash etc. Sounds like the torque converter locking up. I always thought that was an overdrive. In any case it has 4 distinct engine rpm ranges from acceleration to cruise speed. What do you think.  Also ran my 31" swamper tsl radials on the highway for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised how well they rode. Even the acceleration and power were not bad at all. I had initially set air pressure at 28F/ 26R and got a nice footprint and good handling. After a sustained 65mph for 20 mi. tire temps were 102F/101R, measured at the rubber surface between the treads. Any input on that? I don't have a true tire temp guage, I'm using the Ifr temp guage I use to monitor head temps on my nitro rc motors, but it's pretty accurate.

Sounds like the torque converter locking up.

It is, I have that too, stopped working
about 100,000 miles ago, just a selonoid
but I haven't got in there to replace it
