swift engine cooling?

with my broken ankle, i've had lots of time to think about what all needs to be completed on my samurai.  which has led me to my current question;  i've done a fair bit of searching and i'm looking for some good ideas to steal on how to cool the swift motor.

i know about the chevy sprint water-neck, but i'm looking for some more details on how you've run the coolant lines.  (i'm thinking of using some of the stainless / flexible summit units.)

also, what about the radiator and fan assembly.  i've seen very little anywhere on what most people are using for a fan.  (aftermarket or donor unit.)  to complicate matters, i'm doing a turbo-set-up and have real doubt on the ability of the stock sami radiator to keep it's cool.  any good donor vehicle's to scope out for a swap or am i gonna have to go aftermarket there as well.

i've posted this in some other forums, but i'm still looking for some good info.

basically, i'm just looking for some good tips on handling the cooling issue.  any help is appreciated.  thanks in advance.

Anyway, are you swapping in a Twin-cam 1.3 Swift motor? If so, here's an article that may inspire/help:

The stock 1.3 radiator is good for cooling the 1.3, 1.3 twincam, 1.6 8-valve, and 1.6 16-valve all running NA, with turbo... dunno. Maybe Wild can share with us how much warmer his engine runs with the turbo on there?

not too good.  lots of people out there who provide bad / irrelevant information with no first hand experience on the question being asked.

in hindsight, it was bad form to make the statement regarding other forums.  i, like others, frequent several different forums and i was simply trying to avoid the wrath typically given to "cross-posters".

anyway, i've swapped in the 1.3 twin cam engine.  it was re-built with the intention of adding boost.  i just got my harness back from whazoo and i'm ready to get to work.  just gotta get healed up.

On that fan issue I 'think' you can use the clutch fan off of a 1.6 ribbed belt set up. OR, you can put the samurai water pump on there and use that clutch fan. The difference is the spread on the 4 bolts. The swift is a wider pattern. There's a couple of lurkers here that have done that swap. Maybe they'll chime in.

I found that the stock fan and radiator
does a fine job of cooling the Turbo SideKick.
When I ran an electric fan I couldn't keep
it cool enough, even tho it was supposed
to be enough fan for a V8 size engine   >:(

I have switched back to the stock thermostat
(180*) and that the intake air temp has not
changed up with hotter coolant.

Are  you going to intercool your Turbo setup ??
You should you know, ping is hard on engines

Ohh I have an Auto Trans too, which adds more
heat to the cooling system, tho I did add a Trans
Cooler to help with the heat load, I did it mostly
because I was running 9 PSI boost, with 33"
Swampers and 4.62 ring and pinions, I was skeert

yes, it will have an air to air intercooler.  down here, i don't think it wouldn't survive for long without one.  right now i have an mx-6 unit mocked-up, but that will likely change in the near future.  i just believe there's too much distance for the air to travel to reach the IC.  gonna try and locate a longer, low-profile (height) unit to swap into place.

[hijack]i had the engine re-built with the intention of adding boost.  forged low-compression pistons, larger wrist pins.   i've also added some turbo dsm injectors and in-tank fuel pump to help keep the mixture from running lean.  then i'll use a piggy-back SAFC to tune the mixture.  the goal is to safely run 10psi on a constant basis.[/hijack]

thanks for the tip on the electrical fan.  it seems everybody i talk to has issues with electrical fans.  

i guess i'll try to get the stock sami pump installed on the front of the swift engine, so i can use the stock fan and clutch from the sami.

anybody else have ideas?

I put a 100 dollar flex-lite electric fan on my old track, just zip tied to the rad and put it on a manual switch. You have to pay attention to if it's a push or pull fan, put it on and thought it was great then my buddy (electrical nut) showed me the blade was backwards. It was hooked up right just turned the blade around (blow your fingers off). On a 70 degree day the temp gauge would go from half mark almost down to the cold mark.

I put the manual switch on for hitting the deeper water holes ( lost to many plastic fan blades and 1 rad, oops) ::) ::)
When this thing hits 88 MPH your gonna see some serious sh!t (hahaha)
