Heater not working... What to look for on a 1996 Tracker
« on: November 22, 2005, 02:39:09 PM »
Hi,

Just working out that last of the bugs I found in my used tracker I purchased recently. I tried the heat out today, and its not working. They blower works fine, and the temp lever moves properly. I have hear a small door flap back and forth when moving the lever from cold to hot. Still no heat. The engine runs at a normal temp, and there are no visible coolant leaks anywhere in or out of the vehicle.

What would you suggest as a starting point to troubleshoot this issue?
I see several posts for sammys talking about cleaning leaves and debris from the top of the heater core, is this also a known issue on trackers/sidekicks?

Generally speaking, a leaf-clogged blower box (where the leaves gather to party in a Samurai) has a noisy blower from the leaf debris getting knocked about by the blower cage.  If you have a noisy blower, you might have to perform the leaf removal operation.

However--

Before you try that, I would look under the hood at the center of the firewall below the distributor on the passenger side where the heater valve is located. Check the linkage to see if it is actually opening and shutting the coolant flow valve itself.

Things are kinda busy in that location, but - with the help of an assistant - you should be able to spot the linkage motion when someone inside the truck moves the Heat lever.

If that is not the problem, then you have a linkage problem in the dash......

Good luck!

Also flushing out the heater core might not be a bad idea. You'd have to undo the lines going into the firewall in the engine bay, the ones running to the heater core. Yake a hose and put it on the inlet, and turn the water on. Run a low pressure first, because if it clogged badly, it might blow the core! I had similar porblems with mine, and after cleaning out the mouse nest and fluishing the core out, I had pretty good heat blowing out.
