How to time a 1996 Tracker ?
« on: November 26, 2005, 09:00:05 PM »

Underhood  Spec. shows a need to jump two elec. contacts before setting timing. I presume this is to disable auto-advance. Where is this located ?  The new Haynes book doesn't say a thing about jumping 2 contacts. I have been reading and searching this forum for hours and can find no mention of this procedure.

                                                      Thankyou,
                                                             Bill

there should be a small white plug next to the battery with a black rubber plug cover on it,take it off and see if it has six holes in it, you jump number four to number five(the two on the lower left side with the slots next to them) time at 800 rpm, 5 deg. btdc when the engine is warmed up.

I would have to go out and look at my book,But it's 18 deg. in my shop right now so your gunna have ta wait  ;D I'm not sure but it might be on your fuse block using a fuse to ground it out? The book I had in the house was for obdII but it looks the same as my 16 valve but has two extra holes in the plug.

Mrfuelish,

I went out and looked ( Only 39 degrees out )  and the only plug on the firewall near the battery was black plastic. 3 wires go in cap and a vacuum line is in the other end. It does have 3 slots over 3 contacts. 18 degrees at your place, that is cold. Thanks for taking time to respond.

The thing Mr Fuelish is talking about should be on the fender in front of the battery, not on the firewall.  At least that's where I've always seen it.

Wahoo ! I found it. It is over the right front headlight. Thanks to all that took the trouble to respond to my query. Agent-Orange gave me a link from Autozone that layed it all out in great detail. The link covers all of the different engines. Check it out, great info.

                                                                               Thanks again everyone,

I think you found the rear washer pump
plug for the hard tops, over by the battery
but not on the fire wall, it will have a rubber
cover on it.

Wildgoody,

The plug is over the right front headlight.  AutoZone clearly discribed the plug and location of where to find it. Even has a drawing of the plug. Has a rubber cover and one unused slot as shown.  Check out the link Agent-Orange sent.
