soft tops (newbie question)
« on: November 28, 2005, 05:22:39 PM »
I've got a question that i have never seen asked on here... but then again, not many people talk about soft tops...  i'm just wondering what's the difference between the pre-96 trackers and 96 and newer?  the only difference i can tell is the front grills, and that has nothing to do with the top!  I'm in desperate need of a new softtop, but i don't see the point in spending a hundred extra dollars for something that is the same... if i order a new top from bestop or something, will they just send the top itself or will they add the bars and all the hardware?  i just need the top, or would i be better off doing a redneck rig?  using duct tape around the holes?  my only problems are at the corner of the door (where the window meets the top piece)... and on the top corner of the back window... the stitching came undone... the back window doesn't cause a leak, because its up under the black part of the top (vynil or canvas, whatever the material is)... but the other spot, water runs in WAY too much when i'm driving in the rain...   also, all of my velcro is bad worn out, and it won't even connect... but i'm not worried about that.. .i'm just worried about those two spots..... or better yet, would anyone be willing to start a "Anthony's Sunport" charity?  just send me the money, and when i raise enough, i'll order a sunport, and i'll even put a list on my tracker in honor of all the folks who gave...  (hagen, sikid, bewley, those are just a few that i can think of at the moment)

ebay is your friend :)

You can easily find tops on ebay for less than $200 including shipping if you watch, I have even seen them go as low as $89!

Pre 96 Track/Kicks have a different mounting system,
and if you find a pree 96 in the wrecking yard, you can
retro fit it to your Tracker and then get the cheaper top.

yeah, newer ones have zip out windows... wildgoody, i don't know about other places, but around here, they would charge about a hundred dollars for a top even from a junk yard...maybe not that much, but it would still be expensive...  i think i'm just gonna use the quacker tape and wait until i can afford a new top

Maybe you could get an upholsterer or sail maker to repair your existing top.

You could stitch the rips and use silicone
and a patch from the inside, use clear fishing
line for best appearance, and get some vinyl
material for patches

By the way - they went to the zip-out windows in 95.

I don't need patches or anything like that... its not like a hole that's been torn... its just right there, a gap has formed between the top, the front of the side window, and the corner of the driver's door...just that small area is my major problem area... and all because that strip of velcro has worn out (almost like someone has burned the loops and hooks)  i believe this is the original top from 96 though, so IMO, its a wonder that's all that's wrong with it... but since my last post, i have decided to just get a new top because i went mudding through the woods and stuff, and a bunch of trees and crap has brushed up against the soft plastic windows and scratched them up so bad that i don't think they can be fixed just by cleaning them... i can run a finger down the windows and feel tons of grooves, and from the inside, you can barely see out of them... i'm sure there's some kind of stuff to clean them with, but i figure since i'm having problems with the gaps, the velcro, that torn stitching on the back, and the windows themselves, i'll just get a new top if i can find a good deal..

but when i get a new top, how can i keep from ruining those windows?  even with the same type of driving i do?  i could take the top off altogether, but not if its cold weather; i could just put the old windows on when i'm planning on mudding or something... but i still can barely see out of them...  i would LOVE to get a new soft top and a hard top, and keep the hardtop on during cold weather, and put the soft on for when it warms up, but i don't have any room to store it, the hard top is out of my price range, considering i'm still paying on the car itself...

Twan:

Apparently, there is some difference between the '95 and the '96 top to the tune of nearly 100 bucks (see ebay...).  maybe it's got extra, unobtainium-reinforced seams... ;D

Also, I have yet to find the emergency flasher on my '96 Tracker!

When it does work, the clicking sound comes from inside the center console near the radio! ???

BTW, if you know where the flasher relay is and how to get to it without destroying the center console, please pm me!  Thanks.

(famous words from the professor from futurama) "good news nobody!"   i got my christmas bonus today, and i think i'm gonna use it to get myself a new top!  also, last night, i found the coolest top i've ever seen!  its made to fit 95 to 98 trackers, and its supposed to be quad-flambobulated stitching made from the self pulled pubic hair of the pygmies of australia so its super strong..... lol... ok, that's all a joke, but i think i remember seeing something about it being the strongest and most durable you can get... the part i like about it, is its camouflage!  and its only 317 plus s&h....  has anyone seen these? do they really look as good as the pictures, are they good quality like the ad claims?  also, the same people make a solid black top, with the option of tinted windows... i would like that, because my door windows are already tinted (but i wonder how close they would match?)...  for some reason i haven't seen the camo with tinted windows... but that would be REALLY nice!!  if i can find it, that's definately what i'm going to get

It's a cool camo top, but a little high, well
maybe not for your year, but I ordered a
new early top shipped for $200, mine is
Bestop's off brand Road Ends or something
like that

i'm pissed my debt card number was stolen and someone went crazy and bought up all kinds of stuff.  so i've had to delay posting my 89-94 top on ebay till i get a new card and can update my card info as a seller....but anyway, just needed to vent.  does anyone know what company sells 95-98 tops with tinted windows?  i have not found one yet...not for 95-98 at least.  my top is done and i need one right now.
