sammi dome lamp
« on: November 30, 2005, 01:42:29 PM »
Alright, stupid question  but did all sammis have a dome lamp(soft tops)???????I have seen some with them but others like mine that have no visible signs of wiring, or a lamp ever being there.  I would like to add one,  and want to keep it as factory looking as possible.  thanks in advance for any help, also some pics would help a ton

I just bought mine yesterday...so, I'm new to it..but it does have one, and it works!

It is an 1988 model, not the 88.5, I think. It has round dash vents and a 3-spoke wheel.

Not much help, but at least you know the 88 models came with or without them.

Both of my 88 sammies have them but only the driver side door has the switch, and the switch takes a couple of minutes to pop out for the light to come on ::) oh ya and the anoying buzzer with it.

If you want to fix the switch, a little penetrating oil or spray lubricant will do the trick for awhile, then you'll have to do it again.  I use a clear utility light from the local auto parts store; it's a rectangular light with a push button switch. The tradeoff is that it doesn't come on when the door opens, but on the other hand it's very bright and really lights up the inside when switched on. It is what Suzuki should have used instead of the anemic little light that they did. BTW, I have a Tracker, not a Sammy, so your mileage may vary...

Where can I find the door-activation switch for the dome light in my 88 sami? I didn't see one or any wiring for it, but I didn't look really hard. I'll have to check it out again during lunch.

My bulb was ruined, but the light was getting power and ground, so a new bulb will fix it.

Remove the buzzer.  It should be in the passenger end of the wiring harness, above the package tray (maybe screwed to the backside of the dash, I can't remember for sure).  IIRC, the only thing I have found the buzzer to do, is to let you know when the door is open with the key in the ignition.

Front of the door jamb.  About in line with the door strap.
The door switch grounds through the edge of the door jamb hole, so even if your bulb is good (and the dome light switch is set to the center position), your dome light may not come on when the door is opened.  I know I have had problems with mine grounding.  I have cleaned the edge of the hole and put some dielectric grease on it, so we'll see if that helps.
