Ruined my day
« on: November 30, 2005, 02:06:43 PM »
Well i have been reading and reading on here for a couple days straight now because i want to lift my Tracker but i don't want to ask questions that have already been asked and annoy everybody. What i decided was that i would love to have 31's on my Tracker. I read posts on body lifts and suspension lifts and started learning things. I decided i would prefer a suspension lift over a body lift. I just phoned a shop that was recommended to me by Mopac. The guy on the phone completely contradicted everything i have read on here. He said, "To get 31's on a Tracker you are looking at 3 inches of body lift and 3 inches of suspension lift. Total costs after shipping and install will be around $2500CDN, which is why most guys won't do it."
He said that he would love to do it but understands that i probably won't want to do it anymore, and he was right.
So now, i didn't want to annoy people with questions but, is what he says true? I mean i have read on here that people were getting 31's to fit with 2 inches of body lift alone. I don't know what to do now, i can't start on this until i know the end cost. Where should i go from here?

Do a 3" body lift and coil spacers and 31's will be fine. You may need to trim a little fender but it ain't no biggie. It shouldn't cost but a couple hundred $US if you do the work yourself.

I've read posts that show the difference between the 2" and 3" body lift. The 2" seems alot easier than the 3" because of lengths of lines and hoses etc. So how big of a tire could i put on with a 2" body lift and coil spacers? Preferably without fender trimming.

Yeah, the 2" is easy to do, so are the coil spacers. I currently have 235/75-15's on 15"x7" black spokes with 3.75" backspacing, RRO's 2" body lift and coil spacers on my '96 and nothing rubs at all. That's with no trimming and I've had it flexed out on the trail and on a 30* RTI Ramp. Since 235's are 29" I'd say 30" would probably fit my rig without a problem.

i would not even consider the 2", with the 3" the gains out weigh the cons i.m.o.  the total time and skill level needed for the 3" is nothing more than a day and a  weekend warrior with some hand tools and access to a welder(muffler shop) if needed be for a steering extension.  As stated in a prev. post a 3" bl and 1.5" coil spacers(with coil spacers you need strut plate flip and longer shocks or extensions, another easy job) you will turn 31's no prob with minor trimming.  I have pics if you want of my old track with that setup and 31 x 10.5 if you want.  cost wise (just going off of memory here, 140.00 bl calmini, 80 coil spacers sky mfg., shock extensions 6.00 napa, tires and rims are up to you, rockrawler steel custom bs wheels are about 40 each form 4wheelparts, tires figure at 80-130 each

You may need to trim the fenders (or adjust them a little) with any size over 235s. For big tyres you need a bodylift. Theoretically the suspension lift won't make any difference to clearance as the wheel 'should' still come up just as far and a bigger tyre will come up further (if you see what I mean). Some kits have stiffer springs which reduce up travel, the 3" Calmini kit has different A arms which seem to give more clearance, even with the 3+3 some people need to trim for 31s.

This has only a 2" lift spring, a 3" body lift and a tiny bit of fender trimming and it dosen't even rub on the 34" Swampers at all!  :-*

Was this:

NOW this:

Seriously, do the 3" body and a 2" lift spring (or 2" spacers) and you can run 31X10.50 tires on 15X8 wheels. Some minor trimming may be required to the inner fenderwell, but it depends on the offset of your wheel.

before i even knew what a BL was, or what IFS was, i fitted 31"s to my stock as a rock vitara. stock suspension, stock shocks, struts and coils!

all i did was trim the back of the front fenders, and bashed the firewall back so the tyres could turn.

with this set up, i was getting sideways around corners in the dry due to the increased width and stability before any lift mods were done.

then the sway bar fell off, and the body grew about 3", and followed by a 3" suspension growth spurt, and presto.

what kit was MOPAC going to sell you? you can get a full 3+3 calmini kit into canada for around $1500 (that inlcuded the steering stabilizer) and if you have a garage and some hand tools most of it can be done yourself. I found the 3" body lift a royal pain! If you go 2" you don't need to worry about shifters. brakeline, fuel filler extension etc.
