Rattling, scrapping sound

Rattling, scrapping sound

Hey guys, last week i had a long drive in my sidekick, and on the return it started making a very metally rattling sound, sounds like it is coming out from under  the car,

It only made the sound when the engine was being pushed, (under stress!) liek when coming to a hill on the motorway, or else when the engine is cold and i am accelerating hard

Could this be my catilitic (spelling) and would it require changing?
If it does need changing, could i simply just cut it out, and weld in a straight pipe and still have my kick pass the mot? or would the emmissions really be affected?

just a lil more info on my kick:
1994-5 3 door tin top JLX
1.6lt, 8 Valve, 3 speed auto

it could just be the heat sheild thats over the converter to protect the body/interior from getting to hot....

The heat shield surrounding my catalytic converter wore out on the points that hold it around the converter and made the same rattling noise. I got 2 really big hose clamps and tightened it on there good. No more rattle.

I found my heatsheild on the manifold rusted completely off and was bouncing around in the engine bay, check that, it's easy to see.

Another source of the noise is a broken ceramic element in the catalytic converter.  Although it is usually caused by doing violent things to the cat (bashing it on rocks is a good way to shatter it) when they break up, you end up with a sound that makes you think the engine is about to explode.

I took my old Cat off to knock the thing out
of it, and it was allready gone  :o

Must of turboed it out or something

thanks for all the replies guys! i took my zuki down to the garage and lifted it up and u guys were right, the cat heatshild is busted... one of the clamps has snapped, so fornow i just bent it away, its a bit better, but still makes a buzzing sound,

hmm, so maybe my engine isn't about to explode!  I'll have to check the manifold cover and cat heat shield.  Good topic, seems like a common problem.

cat converters don't do that if you put them under the work bench.
that's where mine is.

Well I checked both of those just now and everything seems to be in tip top shape.  Next I'm looking at the valve lash.  Anyone know if a shop will charge me to adjust this?  I haven't got the tools or the expertise just yet, but it seems simple.

I took the top and the bottem of the heat sheild off my cat and it stoped rattling

mine duse the same thing its the cat sheild or the mount on the tranny to the cat has come loose. my studs broke on the cat so i straped it to the mount. if you live in a smog strict area dont cut the cat out you will not pass smog at all. it will cast you moore if it grose poluter because youd have to have a smog shop fix it and thay charge you more for what a muffler shop would to fix it.

smog shop eh where you live? if we pass but it is suspicios then the mto will bring you into there own testing site and do it but a specific smog shop is kinda neat
