SPRINGS OVER AXLE OR SPRINGS UNDER AXLE WHICH IS BETTER
« on: December 19, 2005, 07:09:06 PM »
Just courious, I'm getting ready to install 1 1/2" lift  yj springs with trail tough missing links  on samurai.  Im going to be using a tube front clip and will also tube the rear.  I will be installing 36" swampers.  I'm thinking about going spring under as there will be no sheetmetal clearance issues, to keep a lower center of gravity.  Also with spring under, shouldnt have any axle rap.  Is there anything wrong with going spring under?   Will the springs have the equal amount of flex, or will they have less?  Looking for opinions with pros and cons.

It is a normal debate but in spoa the springs have more leverage, and flex better then spua

Which is better or which one is easier?  The spoa axle flexes the best if done competently. The spua takes a lot of spring arch for bigger tires and usually does not as good in the flex dept. Trying to clear 36"swampers would require the yj kit and 3" lift springs and a possible 3" body lift in a spua setup.
I run 1-1/2" yj's in spoa form and stuff my 33" tires into the fenders. 36" tires in spua with lifted yj would rub and not stuff right.

Thanks :)  I guess I will  go with spoa.    Like I said, I have no sheetmetal, could run much larger than 36 I would think.  But, I dont want to give up any articulation.  ALSO, I was told that I wouldnt need a traction bar with these springs, is this true?

Spua is less of a headache IMO. I have had much more fun in my SPUA sami then my SPOA sami. But then again, my SPOA sami is a pile.

Spring under is much less of a headache.  Spring over requires a lot more modification to make it work correctly.
