plugs, wires, tune-up...recommendations please
« on: December 20, 2005, 07:55:14 AM »
I want to tune-up my sons 97 tracker.  What things should I do and what brands/types should I go with (NGK, AC Delco, Nippon Denso, etc...)?

Thanks!

:)

Ahh.. tune ups.

For plugs, I am a nippondenso fan, but they're hard to come by here. I usually just buy the bosch platinum +4's.

A 3/8" Spark Plug socket will work fine, I also find it easy to change them when I have a long extension on my ratchet. (I have an 8".)

Get some good wires. Don't get the universal fit (the fit is bunk) unless you want to have the possibility of the wires not staying on, or connecting right.
For the distributor cap, I'd recommend finding one that has the brass parts in it. They tend to last longer and conduct better.
The rotor doesn't really matter.
Get a good PCV if you plan to replace it.

If you're going to replace the air filter think about a K & N. In most cases I've seen it improve both power and gas mileage.

...

That's about it I think...?

I'm going to make this another opportunity to post the pic of the Idle Adjustment screw for the 16 valve. You might play with this some to get the idle where you want it.

I've heard that the standard's are better, do platinums work better in the 1.6ltrs?  I have the tools for the job and I'm going to show my son how to do it.
As for plug wires, will any brand do?

I'm having fun helping him do this to his Geo, I can hardly wait till I find one for myself.  I like your's.  I can't get onto your web page, do you have more pic's?

Doh, the server at the house must be down. UGH. This might mean I have to go home at lunch and fix it. :P

My back up is cardomain:

:)

As for brands of plug wires, Not sure. My set right now is universal and they suck. I haven't purchased a new set yet, but maybe Bosch or Champion?

I've read somewhere that in imports platinum seems to work better, but I can't remember where I got that. They work great in mine.

EDIT: Turns out 80% of DSL in the valley is down as the main provider is currently running on battery backup. LOL. Should be back online soon, whenever they get to full power again. Hahaha..

Use NGK for plug wires and if you want their plugs are ok too. The Iridium plugs are good and last way longer than the standard type but they are $$$. As mentioned brass parts are better for your cap and rotor.

ngk for plugs and wires - the quality of the wires can't be beat.
