Towing Trackers (again)
« on: December 20, 2005, 07:59:14 PM »
Ok here is the situation. I am picking up my wifes Tracker tomorrow and was planing on towing it home with a towbar (300 miles). It is an Automatic with auto hubs. The book says not to tow an auto hub truck without a dolly. So could I just remove the hubs put some rear center caps on to keep out junk and safely tow it? I hope so otherwise I am in a bind. I am going solo to get it so no one can drive it home. Any advice please.  ??? :-[

Ok. Doesn't sound like fun on a 20* (-6*C ) day outside in the snow but so be it. Thanks for the advise. I'm off to get it. ;)

Is the rucklet not running ???

I would leave the hubs, just drop the rear shaft
The hubs roll like that all the time, as long as they
are not enguaged.

If it's a runnng trucklet, start and idle the engine in
neutral, that will lube the trans for 300 miles

He's picking it up by himself, no one to drive it back.

I have to say I've seen many of them with auto hubs bouncing along behind motorhomes.  Can't be too much of a problem.

personally i'd shift the transfer case into neutral and not worry about it...  just shift the transfercase and tranny in neutral and it will be fine.  Did it to mine and haven't had a problem with it.  Granted i swapped trannys after a year, but that was for differnt reasons.  if the tranny is in nuetral and turning if ther eis oil it should lubricate itself well.  anyways my .02

actually it was with an auto trans i swapped the trannys out to cnvert to a standard 5 speed if you shift the transfer case to neutral the tranny doesn't spin.  provided you can shift it to neutral.  anyways...

I think you might be right, I was thinking about the output
shaft and being part of the trans, but it's not is it   Hmmm

If your doubting me my dads been a mechanic for a very long time and when me and my bro told him (This was years ago btw) that we towed my kick up to get it washed out.  HE first screamed at us for messign up the tranny till we told him we shifted the transfercase into neutral. He said appologized to us after that and said we did no harm.  (side note from life exeriance)

Well, I just got home. I didn't buy that tracker for my wife after all. Seems the seller and I had a differance in opinion of what "No Rust" means.  >:(

I hated driving home empty handed but my wife would not have been happy with it. Mine has no rust at all. This one was a year newer but looked 10 years older. Too bad because it ran and drove really nice.

I need to find her one soon. It's a good thing mine is a stick or she would be stealing it from me.  :(

I do wonder why the owners manual makes such a big deal about towing one of these with the auto hubs. They make it sould like you will destroy it yet I always see them behing motorhomes.  ???

Sucks man.  Welcome to Michigan.  Remember that in some people's minds if it has no rust holes you can stick your head through it's "got very little rust". ::)

Mine's actually pretty solid so I was pleased with that.  Then the engine went... :P  I'll keep my eyes open for ya but there isn't much up here.

heh the reason is few people think to shift the transfercase into neutral to tow.... which would mess things up...  in thier eyes better safe than sorry and replacing 1500 drivetrains because people didn't shift the transfercase.

I'm not sure where you are Shredder but there are several 4WD track/kicks down here just west of Blytheville, AR.  I'm not sure of their condition, but the guy is somewhat of a mechanic and keeps several on his lot.  I'm heading that way later today and will look closer as we drive by.
