Engine Swap

Hey All,

Im running a 93 Kick, 2WD for the moment...going to get it converted to 4x4....after the first of the year....
I am currently running a 8V...I have a turbo for it (have pics if people want to see), but for the ammount of work it needs im thinking of swapping the engine out...


Right Now I am leaning towards a 16V....Not OBD II....

I have also heard great things about the 2.0, 2.7 V6 (XL7)  etc but I have been told getting it to pass emissions is pretty difficult...as it is obd II

.Ive done most of my own work, and feel fine swapping in a 16v, but the headache, and prices im getting quoted for a 2.0 doesn't make it seem worth while....

Any recomendations

What is the horsepower you get out of a 2.0? I'd say go for the 16v, and if you want to deal with the headaches of OBDII go all the way to the 2.7.

Just my opinion, I have a 1.3L right now  ;D

2.0 is rated at 127hp 130tq

XL 7 is rated at around 180, but will need a custom motor mount

16V basically a bolt in (apx 100 hp stock), but needs harness /ecu

2.0 needs cutom flywheel and mounts

Do the bellhousings bolt together? Can I use at stock trans with the 2.0 eng?

There is some interchangeability. Try doing a search for this... we were talking about the 1.8 and the 2.0 working with stock Sidekick (1.6) transmissions earlier last year. I know I have a 1.8 bolted to a 2wd 1.6 Sidekick transmission using the 1.8 flywheel and clutch. I "think" [do the search] that someone said the 2.0 needed a thinner flywheel to work.

I did the OBDII swap 1996 tracker 2WD auto inna 88 sami and pulled the harness outta 95 (OBDI) to make everything kosher. Now i would recommend that you do all of your research as to what has to be done in order for that rig to pass smog PRIOR to starting. I found out that OBDII has to have all of the EVAP system sensors in working order for the rig to pass smog... OBDI has 8 (I think) whereas OBDII has 12-16. All that means is that if you have a bad sensor (something as simple as a bad gas cap) you fail. The plus side to OBDII is the computer compatability.... you can re-program them :)

BTW, I got mine to pass smog here in Kali... and that's tough.

I put the 16V in my Sami and love it. My wife has a 4-door Tracker with the same engine. I don't think that you would be disappointed with this swap.

Mine passes emissions even with the main cat gutted. It still has the 2 pre-cats.
I don't tell them it's a 2001 engine and they don't ask. Here in Wisconsin 95 and prior they run on the wheel dyno to check emissions.Mine passes 1995 levels fine.
1996 and later they plug into the OBDII conector
and if there is no codes you pass.
I have managed to get it so no codes are present now
anyways.
