swap question
« on: August 11, 2009, 07:49:21 PM »
Ok so .  I came a cross a deal today and  picked me up a 95 4 door  with 1.6 16 valve and 5 speed trany
Why  this,,,, when I was looking for a  4 speed auto ?   Well I Got a good price .
So now  my question . Is there any real issue with swapping this into my 89 2 door  that had a 1.6 8valed with 3 speed .
I been looking for  threads on this  here on the forum ?? Maybe I missed it so if I did could someone  point me  to the right place .

Otherwise , im thinking  all I really need is to swap  out  the peddles  , harness and ecm and center consol  into my 89 .
Im running stock tiers  so  would there be any real issues if I left the gearing alone ?

your housings are going to have 462 and the standard runs 512's. I'd swap in the 512's because they are already low on power and you don't want to loose any more power.

You should be fine, I don't believe they switched the front end to the larger spline until 96.  And even if they did, you have all the spare parts you would need to switch over.  :D

If you do a search on AcksFaq for Driveshaft you can find lots of links going over the shafts.  He even has a Tracker manual for it.

You could just pull the engine and leave the auto trans.
Swap the flex plate over to the 16V and bolt it up, otherwise
you could swap all the 5 speed parts over as well, we did a 5 speed
to auto conversion, not too bad, and as far as wheeling, I'd take
an auto over a clutch anytime. my $.02 worth

if your going only for mileage I would wait to swap out diffs. See what you think about the 462 and if you dont like it then swap to the 512

I am not positive that you are dealing with a Samurai here...

That said, if both trucks are TracKicks you should have no problems with driveshaft phasing as the driveshafts are single-piece units.  On the other hand, Samurais have two piece driveshafts and must be properly assembled if separated.

The Haynes Manual is great when used as a campfire starter ESPECIALLY when purchased for fixing a TracKick!

I have seen in the FSMs where they suggest that you mark the flanges so that you can re-assemble things to the way they came from the factory.  That's not a bad idea...

I hope that this helps and I hope that you found Ack's FAQ useful!

ya Ack , your FAQ was great . been doing alot of reading .
no these are both sidekicks . im going to take the 16V  and 5 speed out of the 4 door and put in my 89 . infact , im thinking i going to change the dash  seats , everything . i dont think the back seat from the 4 door will fit into my 2 oor , but the front will  im sure .
my 89 also doesnt have power stearing so thats going over
