Today I just ran a 2.5 trail in my stock 95 tracker, made it up and back just fine but it kept slipping out of 4wheel drive. I ended up having to hold the shifter foward the whole time to make sure it wouldnt pop back into neutral. Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?

Yeah, check and make sure the floor or shift boot on the transfer case lever isn't blocking the movement of the lever. My guess would be the boot or the floor itself is hitting the lever and is not allowing it to stay in place...

A bad T-case mount can let the T-case
fall and that will cause the lever to hit
the body.

when you put it in 4 lo, the shifter is forwards, and may hit on the edge of the transmission tunnel hole where the shifter goes through to the gear box.

even if the shifter doesnt hit the tunner or anything when stationary, when you are driving, or under load, the engine and gearbox will move due to torque, and the movement may be enough for the shifter to hit enough to pop back out.

do you have any body lift? are your engine and gearbox/transfer mounts all good still?
if all the mounts are still good, you can take the shifter out of the transfer, put it in a vice, and bend it backwards a tiny bit so it clears.

and as mentioned already, try checking the shifter boot also. this may be bunching up when in 4 lo and pushing the shifter back.

Here are your choices:

1) Take your truck to the dealer and have them fix it.

2) Go to the local library and check out a Chiltons' or Haynes manual and study the transfer case section to get a better idea of how your truck is put together.  Re-read the above posts.  Check under your truck and/or remove your t-case shifter boot and examine the components for damage or wear.

3) Sell your Tracker and get a Ford Focus.

Expand your mind!  Get dirty!  Dig into your truck and figure out what's going on and fix it!

Normally you'll have problems with the floor, or tranny tunnel, if you've done a body lift.  That must be one really warn out transfer case if it pops out often, and it's all stock otherwise.

yeah its all stock, its been in a accident and has a salvaged title. Other then that I dont know anything about this tracker. The ONLY reason I keep this tracker is because of the 4 wheel drive and without it, ill problly get rid of it.

It's quite possible that the transmission mounting cross member might have been bent upwards, which would push the entire transfer case/transmission assembly up, causing the t-case lever to hit the transmission tunnel/floor opening and get pushed out of gear when it flexes... Easiest fix would be to remove the console, then remove the base of the boot around the tcase lever, slide it slightly forward and drill new holes and screw the base back down again. You might possibly need to trim a little of the front edge of the hole that the lever comes up through if the lever hits it when all the way forward...
