1. Rocker panel protection
2. Bumpers with good recovery points/strap attachment points
3. Skid plate under the front

Then worry about the tranny/t-case. I wouldn't even bother with a gas can unless you plan on wheeling alone for days on end away from civilization...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

I can make the pumpkin caps, and rocker protection on my own no problem. Skid plate... I can probably do that. Just need to take some measurements... but the bumper...

I don't know if I'm up to the challenge of making my own bumpers or not. Want to make ones with receiver hitches so I can put winch on whatever side I need it on... and take off when home.  Looks like pre-fabricated bumpers are $$$$ especially with shipping *shudder*... so I'll probably be forced to at least try and make my own :)

If you can whip up rocker protection, you should be able to whip up some bumpers... you can even buy the receiver sleeves at a Tractor Supply store ready to weld on to your bumpers...

In order of importance for protecting your sheet metal? or your expensive bits?

If sheet metal is your concern.

Rocker Skids  #1 most damaged sheet metal.

If mechanical protection is your aim.

Front Skid (aftermarket 4x4.. Sean Devinney.. the best I have yet seen for sale, yes I have one)

Transfer Skid  (calmini's is OK)

Trans Skid

Rear punkin protection... maybe truss like Calmini, but I hate the loss of clearance (No, I don't have one)

I have been wheeling this little guy for months with stock bumpers.. don't really see any need for aftermarket, except for recovery points..  I mean, I haven't hit anything with them.. but if you tend to hit trees a lot, then yeah, I guess you need heavy, expensive aftermarket or manufactured bumpers.. yeah they look great, and they are on my list... but never have been top of list, and I haven't needed anything more than stock so far... (fingers crossed) I think I will just get the Trail Tough bumpers..  about $300 each.. much cheaper than the competition, and they look better too.. (MUCH better than that abomination ARB sells.. that thing is UGLY)

Cage is near the top of the list too.

The sig says he has an 88 Sammy.

Yes they both need protection.  I'm not really familiar with Sammy's but I would expect having solid axles, pumpkin protection would be more important than a front skid.  Also Sammy's seem to be higher with better breakover angles so rockrails are probably not as important as they are on TrackKicks.

I would say you are on the right track with:
Pumpkin
Tranny/TCase (maybe full belly pan)

Then I would watch your gas tank and rock rails to see how they do with your wheeling.  Definately get some rock sliders if you want to do this
