Samurai Motor Swap
« on: January 25, 2005, 10:51:03 AM »
My buddy has a 87 Samurai 4cyl. It needs a new motor  Since I am new ??? to the suzuki I was needing some help.   He is thiking about the sidekick 1.6 liter.  Is there a place u can get them?  How much do they run?  Also I was wondering if you can put the 1.3 intake and carb on the sidekick 1.6? So he  dont have to mess with the ECM.  What else is involved in the motor swap?  Any brackets u have to buy?  Tranny bolt up?  Please Replie he needs some information and doesnt want to spend to much money on it

I've got a 1.6 16valve, wire harness, and computer for sale in the garage sale right now ;D I'm asking $650 for all I can also get you an adapter plate for the trans.

you'll either need a track/sidekick gas tank with fuel pump, or you'll need to run an external electric pump. as for motor mounts I don't remeber if you can use the 1.6 ones or not. I'm not a sammi guy :-/  but I think you either have to be spoa or run a different oil pan as well.
If your intrested in the mill and other stuff let me know ;D

You might also consider a Volkswagon Diesel engine.

Welcome to the board!

Uses a 1.6 8-valve out of a Sidekick. The complete intake and exhaust from the 1.3 bolts up and works fine. You're sacrificing a little power out of the 1.6 but it'll still stomp the 1.3 you had in there. All that is needed is the 1.6 donor long block and an adapter kit which may be purchased at one of the many fine sponsor we have here at ZUKIWORLD.

I just finished a swap, purchasing a 1.6L Swap Kit is the way to go for the motor. This will hook up your new motor to the Sami tranny and give you the proper motor mounting, instructions should come with it. If you have the $ I'd check out and buy the 1.6L harness from Trail Tough and keep the fuel injection. I did the wiring without the Trail Tough harness and it is a challenge and will test your hampster and patients but it is doable. Will need both the Sami and Kick Service Manuals though.

If you stay with the FI there are a few things that you may run into. But I, with help from others here, have just solved all of those problems so there is help within the forum.

Cheers

Buy the tranny adapter kit and you'll be set!

I swapped a 1.6L into my sammi, and I was able to use the same computer and intake like you stated, but mine is a 91' so it had the trottle body intake on there already so it mad it easier. As far as i'm concerned I don't know how much, if any power I lost, But it still blows the doors off of a 1.3L. You will also need the tranny adapter, And modified motor mount, Then your ready to Make It Hert!

I am still lost. I have the 1.6 8 valve. I have tried using the metal parts of the motor mounts from the 1.6 and the 1.3 and also used the 318 mounts. I can't get them to work at all. Someone PLEASE tell me what ones i need to use to make this work. Jason

There are a few write-ups out there.  Make sure you get a copy of your wiring schematics before you start tearing it apart.

The easy method is to give one of the after market companies, such as Trail Tough, a call and send them your two harnesses.  They can do all the splicing and send it back to you.  You might also try Liberty Overland as they have been known to do pretty solid work.

Blowin doors off huh, those sound like racing words. LOL. As long as your NA I'll take the "pepsi challenge".
Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some freakin' muscle.
