1.6L HP increases
« on: September 22, 2006, 05:44:34 PM »
Guys I have a 95 Geo Tracker "Psyko Chiwaawaa" that I drag race.  Although the engine is pretty much stock w/ a header, I want a HP increase without killing my budget.  I know the rods can't take a whole lot of stress without rebuilding the bottom end.  I do want to stay with the Zook 1.6L.  I do not want to swap engines.  The 1.6 is lightweight -- I just want a little more HP.  I do have a '96 Tracker 1.6L 16V engine but I don't want to run the 16V head.  I want to use my 8V head on this engine.  So far the truck weight is 1840lbs w/o the driver.

Wide open header with a 14in extension.  Cam?  I need one don't know where to find one.  More fuel -- how can I increase the amount of fuel to a TBI?  No headwork as of yet.  I would like to stay away from NOS.
I like normally aspirated.   I would like to use a good 2bbl carb.

you def. want to keep the 16v head dont, i repeat dont use the 8v, try porting the head, depending on your budget theres a guy who built his 1.6l 16v and turboed it. hes now selling it for $2200 for everything including fuel management

I have read someplace (online) -- one guy tested the 16V vs. 8V head and he said the 8V flowed better.  I can't remember were I saw it, I will look for it again.  I have always heard a 16V will outflow an 8V but for some reason this was a different case.  I will try and find it.  I have both heads -- I could take them to a friend of mine and have him flow them both.  Yes I do understand 16V motor has more HP -- It also has MPI.  I am still open for suggestions -- I haven' got rid of my 16V head yet.

port the 16v head, you wont be disappointed, trust me. alot of people underestimate the 16v motor. the guy i told about that built and turboed his 16v said he raced his friends stock wrx and he said he beat it by 3 cars lengths

The SOHC 16v head of the 1.6 outflows the DOHC 16v head of the Suzuki Swift GT. I'd be highly surprised if the 8v head outflowed it. Keep the 16v and get some cam work done on it and you can use the 1.3 flywheel as it is lighter than the 1.6. Mine responded well to a cam regrind and an adjustable cam gear. I had also done the complete exhaust  on mine. The next step was going to an interceptor for the fuel and ignition as these have given reasonable gains. A little pocket porting won't go astray either. You may want to hunt around for different diff ratios. Maybe a 5.38 or a 5.62 to get of the line quicker. You'll need to do some calculations to find your best option.

Thanks for the info -- I am not planning on getting rid of the 16V head -- I just want more info before I drop any more money into my little hot rod.  With the very limited availability of speed parts for the Zook motors it makes gaining HP a little difficult and a deep gouge into the light budget.
