How much gear lube in t case/for track/kick?
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:44:43 AM »
My check bolt is stripped and dont know how much/many jugs of gear lube to put in my t case. I just did a rebuild with 4to1 gears and dont want to have not enough of gear lube in there.

I bought 4 quarts for the t-case and the gearbox when I changed out my clutch. I'd say 2 full quarts went into the gearbox and it took more than the other 2 to fill up the tcase. I haven't filled the tcase yet, I'm going to do that later, but i put the remaining 2 quarts I had in and it still wasn't full. But, as I said, it was all I bought so I left it at that. I'd say it needs 3 quarts, buy 4 just to be safe.

Factory owners manual calls for 3.6 pints (1.7 liters), which is what DAC1138 says.

I tried to loosen the fill plug on the transfer case before I drained it but I couldn't get it loose at all. Tried heating it up and cooling it down with water and using an impact driver...nothin doin.  I had the same problem on my rear diff but we used an air chisel to remove the plug. The difference between the diff and the t-case is the t-case is aluminum so it will get ruined alot easier than a steel rear diff. Anyone got any suggestions?

Long ago, one of the guys at a Jiffy Lube stripped mine, and he managed to dig around below and found something that fit. I think it was off a Nissan or something, but it had an actual head on it, so I could use a socket wrench on it. Hum. I don't have that case anymore to tell you what it is. :(

Yeah I'd be inclined to use some sort of internal hex bolt on there instead of this square hole crap. It just strips out way too easily.
