I painted my chrome ones, not sure why alum. would not come out ok?  just clean them well and make sure that they are warm! spray a real light coat first let it dry for a few minutes then have at it. If the wife is not around you could use the oven!

You have to etch aluminium with a chemical in order to paint it, otherwise the paint will just flake off.

We have it at the shop that I work at, where we make aluminum boats and various other equipment.

I'll go see what its called tomorrow and post the name of the chemical here.

I work at Freeman marine we make aluminum boat parts mostly doors and hatches.
The painting process involves a cleaning with Zepalume (kinda of an acid wash)  then sprayed with a alodine (sp) solution.
 after the parts dry they are primered like regular steel and painted ect.

Zepalume is a product of Zep Mfg I am not aware of it's proper chemical name. I don't know if alodine has a proper name either.

Dwight um yea  dude has some pipes! . Actualy I am realy just a guitar nut / amature musician .

hey  here is some more useless trivia :D Suzuki also makes guitars and harmonicas? the guitars are,  (yawn) OK  but the hamonicas are some of the  best !

They make pianos too if I recall correctly.

Back to the original subject moreso, I believe Alodine is the tradename for the product but I don't remember what it actually is other than a primer/sealer for aluminum.  You generally use it after you chemically wash the aluminum to remove the surface oxide layer.

just started reading through... saw your post. On my aluminum rims, i used commercial aircraft stripper, sandblasted them, then painted them with lacquer paint without priming them. it's now 6 months later and even with chemicals & pressure washing to remove the brake dust, they still look great.  i used silver metallic lacquer from advance auto parts.

Thought about powder coating them? Doesn't cost much and is a pretty tough finish.
