you really do need gears imho....

I have a 3/4 chevy with 37s and it didnt really lack THAT much power with 3.73s...... but I wanted better MPG and an assload more power so Im setting up 4.88s right now (almost done with the rear)

and then I will be golden.....

gears for sure man

and I have 31s with 4.57s..... I could definitely want more power but it is fine for now and I can go on a 2+ hour trip in the sammy offroad through the snow and my gas guage will be at the same place or close to when I started

#1 - are you SURE that's the gas mileage you're getting? Do you know if your speedo has been corrected to match your larger tires? Are you adjusting for that?

I think this may be your problem. At 55 on the speedo is actually closer to 63 MPH. Im sitting here really tired and cant figure out how to calculate that out to how far the odo is. Mabey someone who is a little more awake can calculate it. Off the top of my head Id say if the odo reads 180miles its closer to 200 miles.

Can you post what numbers your odo reads and how many gallons were used?

There's no such thing as a high-performance & fuel efficient vehicle. They're one or the other.

I call shenanigans on that.  Sure, high-performance gives the driver a greater opportunity to drive with far less efficiency, but if you can lay off the temptation, almost any performance upgrade to an engine will increase efficiency, practically by definition.

my egr is flasheing again so i wonder if thats the cause, or  maybe mines just gut less.

Fix whatever is throwing the EGR code (probably clogged EGR passage).....then your MPG should go up.

I shift both my samurai and 4 door sidekick at anywhere from 2500-3500 (usually closer to 2500), unless I am going up a pretty good hill or need to accelerate fast (like when merging into traffic).
Granted both of mine are relatively stock, but I get 27-28 out of the samurai and 28-29 out of the sidekick.

Also, as suggested, make sure you are compensating for your bigger tires....you will be going more miles than what your odo is saying you are.

If it hasn't been done recently....a basic tune up would probably be good too....plugs (stock will probably be just as good as any "exotic" plugs), wires, cap, rotor, check/adjust valves, timing, and TPS.  You could also check all the sensors, to make sure they are all within spec.

If you need to check your actual milage and how fast you are going get a GPS.  Or borrow a friends.  Even the cheapest GPS will have a milage counter and will tell you how fast you are going.

After the EGR thing, this is what I would do.

P.S. I've always shifted between 3,500 and 4,000 on average.

The 1.6 8V puts out 94 lbs of torque at 3,000 or 3,300 depending on where you get your info    The 1.6 16V puts out 99 lbs of torque |removethispart|@ 4,000 RPM. These numbers are your optimal crusing RPM. The RPM where the engine makes the most power is where you want to run the engine to get the best fuel mileage. as for your shift points it does not hurt to exceed the torque point, but not by much. 500 to 1000 RPM depending on your needs.

As you can see from the image above a typical torque curve continues almost flat after it reaches its peak before it starts to fall off. You want to use that flat area of RPM for your acceleration. Ideally what you would do is accelerate to the point where when you shift to the next gear the RPM's would drop back to the peak torque RPM this way you are staying in the power curve at all times.

;) Nope, Mikey, when the turbo is workin' and not spewing oil, it'll run right up to 6500 before it shifts with the auto tranny.  Sounds real good too. Without the turbo, even if I keep my foot to the floor, it auto shifts at 5700. But I do cruise mine on the highway at 3700 to 4000, that's where it seems the most happy.

I put a 3sp auto behind my 16v (and running 5.12's) ... cruise is 4k ... wood shifts are around 5500 ... and yea, I've held it all the way to redline :)

all this on an engine with 235k miles  ;)

still the most dependable rig I could ever get in and drive. someday I'l measure my mileage ...

so wut gears should i look at?? going from 5:12l's  and crusin at 4 grand, thats a little crazy but ill try it on this gas tank.  hey since your shifting at 3300 to 3600  what should you run at?  i mean when you get up to the speed limit do these motors like to run at low rpms or stay at high all the time?

I generally sift around 5000 RPM when accelerating, then find a gear that doesn't feel like it's bogging when maintaining speed. I Shift as necessary (going up / down hills). I get 26 MPG regularly with my 4 door 5 speed.
