&*#^%$#*!^&$ fuel system
« on: February 17, 2008, 05:52:30 PM »
Does anyone have any insight here.
86 1.3
Took it out our hunt camp this weekend just to play. It ran great for about 45 minutes then as driving along it would just die. It 's like the fuel just shuts down.
I changed the fuel filter and the check valve, That wasn't the problem. I then went into town and bought a new fuel pump, That wasn't the problem.
It seems like it runs fine until it gets to normal running temp then it will go for  a couple hundred yds and die, You have to wait 5 minutes or so and it will fire up for another couple hundred yards.
I then drained all the fuel (full freaking tank) and it ran great for  close to an hr so I figured it was bad gas. Well low and behold the thing died again.
What the hell is going on with this thing? Any ideas?

that was happening to a friend and we found it was a bad ECM
if you someone with a sammi swap out the ECM and see if that helps

Also, check your ground connections!  Especially the one to the distributor.  Look for black ground wires attached to grounding points on the body.  These things can cause intermittent loss of spark  although I have to agree with the flaky ECM diagnosis, too.

I'm hoping that I don't have to spend a bunch of money on the carb but if I have to then I have to I guess. I'll check the ground wires and the ECM first and see what happens there. Thanks a bunch guys.

Check your choke first, and then make sure your down pipe has not collapsed if stock. (my 88 was it has an inner walled pipe)

What about the redneck carb clean. Maybe something is floating around and blocking up a passage. ??? ??? I would try that since it can't harm anything. ;)

i'm not sure what a redneck carb clean is but i experienced a similar problem (ford truck) and it drove me nuts until i found the little rock in a fuel hose near the tank.
i think that little rock would roll up to a metal fuel line and plug, roll back when fuel not being drawn (like after it died), but after a while i could start, be good for a couple miles, then wait awhile again.
i found the rock when i was working all the way back to the tank trying to find the problem.
just a memory of long ago.....you reminded me.

Ok, I haven't had time to mess with the sammy until today. I took it to the field down the street. I am still thinking fuel instead of coil, ecm, distributor and so forth. I rerouted the fuel line thinking vapor lock, That wasn't it. I started talking to a guy down there that is a mechanic and he listened to it start but then bog out. He said drop the tank, There may be an inside sock (filter) thats collapsing due to crap collecting on it. So, before I drop the tank I wanted to ask. Does anyone know if there is a sock type filter insode the tank?

Yes there should be a sock type filter at the end inside the tank. I find it highly unlikely that it is collapsed, or even plugged up for that matter. Unless you have been dumping crappy fuel in your tank.

My boys just bought it from a buddy that didn't have it for long and ran into harrd times. It seeems like a fuel issue. I pulled the fuel line while turning it over and barely fuel at all is coming out. The lines don't look kinked and I've already replace the filter, pump and check valve.Aafter doing all of that I drained the fuel and dumped 5 freah gallons in. It ran for close to an hr. and then died again. It could be the coil but It's getting spark. It just seems like it's starving for fuel when it dies out.

Try running it with the gas cap off, if it still does it you might have to drop the tank it's no big deal and there is no sock that I know of in a sammie tank(with carb) but does not mean that there is not something floating around in there, also use a fram fuel filter instead of say a napa gold there is alot more paper in them, the only thing I did to mine when putting the tank back up was to add a foot or so more fuel line to the top of the tank to make it easyer to put back up there by myself and have spare line if I ever need it.
