« on: February 28, 2008, 07:19:27 PM »
its a 91 sammy... the front end vibrates pretty hard, but only when im in 4wd i thought maybe it was the u joints and they needed to be replaced anyway so i did em but the vibration is still there and has gotten worse over the last 4 or 5 months, I dont know much about working on axles but am willing to learn if someone can help diagnose my problem. any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

Check to see if your front drive shaft is balanced.  I may be bent as well.... I have a rock crawler that has a home made front shaft and it is miserable at anything above than 10-15 mph.  Hope this helps.

It sounds like a front drive line issue, like ripsnort mentioned.  A good way to test would be to pull your front drive line, then drive around with your hubs locked in.

You know, I had been wheeling for years before anyone mentioned that you had to do that to your drive lines.  Guess I never went fast enough for it to matter.  :D

sorry, i forgot to mention i already checked my d shaft and it is aligned i also replaced my d shaft with another used one in case it was bent but it still has the vibration.  If i take it off and ltry to drive it in 4wd will anything get screwed up?

Nope.  In reality though, you don't have to drive in 4wd, just have your front hubs locked in.  This will allow the parts in your front end to rotate freely.  Of course, this test only works if you have manual hubs... should have mentioned that.

I was picking up some vibrations, it ended up being a problem in the diff.  With the drive line disconnected I rotated the diff by hand and could feel it binding up.  A quick tear apart and reassembly fixed the problem.
