1.6L-2.0L
« on: September 21, 2004, 08:26:38 AM »
I have a 1994 Sunrunner GT and I was thinking of taking out the old 1.6L and puting in the new 2.0L that makes 155HP, or should I just turbo or supercharge the 1.6L. I just need some info to get my brain going :)

It's like your reading my mind.  The new Aerio has a 155 hp 152 lb/ft 2.3L.  A certain moderator told me that the 2.0L would bolt up to my automatic.  I hope the 2.3L would do the same.  With the gearing I'll have that's plenty of power, and I'll still have only the weight of an inline 4.  Me likey.

LOL, ya  I was/am excited about 155 HP too

You see 155 HP can propel me to 95 MPH in
the 1/4, and there are not too many street
car that do that, let alone a SideKick   ;D

As I understand it, the engine/transmission mounting points are the same but the depth of the bellhousing is different and the 2.0 runs a different crank so there will be issues with the torque converter and flex plate. Also, although the 2.0 was put into the Sidekick in OZ it had a wider chassis so custom engine mounts will be the order of the day. If anyone can confirm this it would be great as I am looking at this as an option.

It sounds like you need someone to just tell you what to do! :D

I say go for it man. Do you have the 2.0 right now, or would you have to buy one? I say if you have it, do it, plus you have some options: 1-swap would mean an extra 1.6 that you could throw in a sami 2- or you could sell the 1.6 to cover the expense of engine mounts for the 2.0 and whatever else you may need for it. If you don't have the 2.0, just hassle wild for all the details on his turbo and do that with your 1.6, I'm assuming it would be less costly...

Swap in the 2 litre, and turbo it! That's the only obvious solution! You could get like 175+hp! :o

Are you thinking 2.0 V6? :) The 2.0 I4 will bolt to the 1.6 8-valve and 16 valve and 1.8 Sidekick transmissions with no mods. IF the 2.3 uses the same transmission goodies as the 2.0 it should be backwards compatible as well.

What about the motor mounts? Do they bolt up as well?

No.  We're talking several different vehicles here. 1.8 from the Sidekick Sport and Esteem, 2.0 from the Vitara and the 2.0 & 2.3 From the Aerio. The Esteem and Aerio engines being transverse mounted.

FWIW, The 1.8 engine that I have bolted to a 1.6 8-valve 2WD transmission appears to have all the the same tapped holes for the engine mounts. Therefore, it might actually work in a Sidekick with the original Sidekick 1.6 engine mounts. Dunno..

Now for a stupid question: How do you go about putting motor mounts for a RWD/4x4 setup on an engine that came transeversley mounted from the factory?
