Still hard starting.
« on: October 17, 2004, 01:48:46 AM »
As some of you know my kick has been starting hard for a few months. A while back i was having problems with it running. I checked the ignition timing and it was way out. So I got it back in time but now the engine starts hard. I figured the timing belt jumped so I checked it and it was right on. I took it off and reset it anyway and nothing. I don't know what is the matter with it and I really don't want to take it to the mechanic. Is there a crank sensor or anything that could be bad or any sort of sensor that could be causing this. Thanks Andrew

But why would the ignition timing just jump out of wack like that?

What year is the Trucklet, some
don't have Crank sensors

Timing jump has to be a bad timing belt,
but you said you looked at that, or it is
possabile you have a sheared pin in the
drive gear of the distributor, but that is
a long shot, as there is no real stress on it
like there is in say a Chevy motor where the
oil pump drives off the bottom of the Distributor
drive shaft

It's probably plugs
Other than that ???

And I think the 95 has Crank Sensor

I'll do the plugs and gap em, see how it goes from there. who knows. I'll also check to see if there is a cam sensor.

I just had a thought, the Crank Sensor
doesn't move, and it's mounted in the
oil pump where the pan gasket is, but
what if the half moon key sheared in the
crank, I have seen it before, and it was a
Zook motor too, that could change the
valve timing and affect the distributor
setting moving the timing

Was the timing retarded of advanced
when you found it was off ???

Retarded would be from the belt or the
crank cog slipping

Hope this helps

Thats not what i wanted to hear!!! I believe the timing was.....retarded though. I don't remember. When i put the light on it the mark was way to the right. I think thats retarded. I don't really know off the top of my head.

That would be advanced if you
look at the front of the engine,
that would also make the engine ping
and run hot, but power should be
OK, retarded would make it run like crap

Well when i first discovered it, it was leaving work in the afternoon. THat morning it had run fine, then i went to leave work and it cranked a little more than usual, I figured nothing of it, then i stepped on the gas and it felt like it wasn't getting fuel. So I limped it home and it sat for a week or so. Then i put the timing light on it and saw it was way out. I had to pull the dist towards me if thats any idication of what it was.

That is advance, and a slipped belt
or bad key in the crank could do that
