Dead Samurai
« on: October 27, 2008, 07:38:37 PM »
I have a 1991 Samurai (EFI 1.3L) that I have been chasing a major dead spot in the throttle for about two months now and still have not determined why it is there.
This morning I was driving to work when the engine shut down like I had shut the key off. I had plenty of battery, lights, radio, heater, everything worked except for the engine running.
I walked back to the house (about a mile) and got my truck and continued to work.
After work I had my wife pull me back to the house where I was able to get it in the garage. If I pour fuel into the throttle body, it will fire off and run for a few seconds before running out of gas.
When I turn the key on I can hear the fuel pump come on and shut off after a few seconds.
I have felt that my throttle dead spot has always been the Throttle Position Sensor.
Here are some questions:
1. Could the TPS have died completely and be causing this problem?
2. Could the computer have died and cause it to run only when I pour fuel in the intake?
3. Could it be a faulty injector?
4. Could it be the fuel pump?
5. Where do I go from here?

when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

do have anything to check fuel pressure with?

the fuel pump could be running but might be clogged or not enough pressure

Ive never worked on a 1.3l efi ( ive got a carb hehe) so not to sure what the truck is equipped with but suzukiinfo.com has some downloads for the efi 1.3l for you could look at it might help.

in my experience ive only had a few tps with dead spots usually the just go. but its a possibility  ???

This is a list of things I have done to it in the last two months,
1. Spark plugs
2. Plug wires
3. Cap & rotor
4. Fuel filter
5. Checked fuel tank for debris
6. Checked fuel pressure (27-28 lbs)
7. Checked timing (10')
8. Checked for loose grounds (found one and repaired)
9. Added fuel dryer twice
10. Checked for vacuum leaks (none)
11. Had TPS checked (OK)
12. Repaired exhaust leak (thought it might be effecting the 02 sensor)
13. Replaced 02 sensor

I agree with the dead computer issue. The circuit that deals with the injector gets corroded because of a capacitor that leaks and ruins the trace. I've replaced 2 computers on injected Samurais because of that problem and more than a dozen on Trackicks.

OK,
A couple more questions.
If the ECU is dead, could it have been malfunctioning and causing the dead spot in the throttle and 1badzuk2 said, ecu is dead you can rebuild it. I can or I can have it rebuilt?
Also,
Someone asked if it had a fuel rail or if the injector is in the throttlebody. It is in the throttlebody.

i asked if its in the throttle body

i was going to say could u see if it was squarting? if not it could just be wiring or injectors. both easy to check

SNJSamurai,
Yes it is a throttlebody. I need to determine if it is a bad injector or the ECU not sending a signal to the injector telling it to open.
1badzuk2,
I will checkout the Link. Thank you
